Sado Airport (IATA: SDO, ICAO: RJSD) is a small regional airport serving Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Located on the eastern coast of the island, it primarily handles domestic flights operated by Toki Air, connecting the island to mainland Japan. Location & Access

Sado Airport is situated in the city of Sado, on the eastern side of the island, approximately 15 kilometres south of the main port town of Ryōtsu and about 10 kilometres north of the city centre of Sawata. The airport sits near the coast, overlooking the Sea of Japan, and is surrounded by rolling hills and agricultural land.

By Air: The only scheduled service is Toki Air, which operates multiple daily flights from Niigata Airport (Kij) on the mainland. The flight time is roughly 40 minutes, offering scenic views over the sea and the island's rugged coastline.

By Car or Taxi: Rental cars are available at the airport from major Japanese agencies. Taxis wait outside the terminal for arriving flights. Driving from the airport to Ryōtsu takes about 20 minutes, to Sawata about 15 minutes, and to the western coast (e.g., Ogi) around 40–50 minutes. The island is well connected by roads, though some areas are mountainous.

By Bus: A local bus service connects the airport to Sawata, Ryōtsu, and other key points on the island. However, schedules are limited and often timed to flight arrivals. Travellers should confirm bus times in advance, especially during off-peak seasons.

Sado Island, in the Sea of Japan, is one of Japan's largest islands outside the main four. It has a population of around 50,000 and is known for its dramatic landscapes: lush mountains, terraced rice paddies, and pristine coastline. The island's history is deeply intertwined with the Sado Gold Mine, which operated from the Edo period until 1989. Today, the mine is a UNESCO World Heritage candidate, offering tours of its tunnels and exhibits.

Sado is also famous for the Toki (crested ibis), once extinct in the wild but now re-introduced through conservation programs. The Sado Island Toki Forest Park and the surrounding wetlands are key sites for birdwatching. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking in the mountainous interior, cycling along coastal routes, and exploring remote fishing villages. The island's cuisine features fresh seafood, particularly buri (yellowtail) and saba (mackerel), as well as local sake. Sado is accessible by ferry from Niigata and Naoetsu, with high-speed jetfoils taking about 70 minutes, making it a popular weekend destination from Tokyo via the Shinkansen to Niigata.
