Overview

Izumo Airport (IZO) is a regional airport serving the city of Izumo and the broader Shimane Prefecture in western Japan. It primarily handles domestic flights, connecting this historically rich area with major hubs like Tokyo and Osaka. Location & Access

Izumo Airport is located about 15 kilometres north of Izumo city centre, near the coast of the Sea of Japan. The airport sits in a flat area close to the Shinji Lake, surrounded by low mountains to the south. Access is primarily by road.

• By bus: Regular limousine buses connect the airport to Izumo-shi Station, the city's main railway station, taking about 30 minutes. These buses align with flight schedules. From Izumo-shi Station, you can connect to local trains, including the JR San'in Main Line, to other destinations in Shimane and Tottori prefectures.
• By taxi: Taxis are available outside the arrivals area. Journey time to central Izumo is roughly 25 minutes.
• By car: The airport is adjacent to the San'in Expressway, about 5 minutes from the Izumo Interchange. Parking is available, including spaces designated for wheelchair users.

There is no direct railway connection to the airport terminal, so bus or taxi are the only public transport options.

• Wheelchair accessibility: The car park has designated accessible spaces, and the terminal entrance is step-free. All toilets include wheelchair-accessible cubicles, and there are changing tables in the restrooms.

• Toilets: Clean, well-maintained facilities with baby changing tables.
• Other services: A small gift shop and vending machines are located in the departures area. Limited seating and a small observation deck are available for pre-flight relaxation.

Note that the airport does not have a hotel or extensive dining options; passengers are advised to eat before arrival or bring snacks for longer waits.

About the Region

Shimane Prefecture is one of Japan's most culturally significant regions, yet relatively off the beaten tourist track. Izumo is best known for the Izumo Taisha, a shrine dedicated to the deity Okuninushi and associated with marriage and good fortune. The shrine complex is one of the oldest in Japan, with a distinctive architectural style. The area also boasts the Adachi Museum of Art, famous for its garden, and the scenic coastline of the Sea of Japan with its rugged cliffs and sandy beaches.

Geographically, the region is part of the San'in region, characterised by a rainy climate and lush greenery. Izumo sits on the Izumo Plain, an agricultural area producing rice, soba noodles, and seaweed from Lake Shinji. The city of Matsue, the prefectural capital with its castle and samurai districts, is about 40 minutes away by car.

Passengers flying into Izumo are often pilgrims visiting the shrine, hikers exploring the Chugoku Mountains, or travellers seeking a more tranquil side of Japan.
