Busiest on Mondays around 6 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
Very small airport. Easy access and plenty of parking. It would be a 4 star review but you have to pay to go onto the observation deck.
I have lived here for a long time so I was here when we didn't have an airport. It's been so wonderful to be able to fly out of Iwakuni instead of taking a train and a bus to get to another airport. This airport is small, but it's great. Lots of parking and parking is FREE for the first five days. Just remember to take your ticket in so you can validate it after you go through security. There is a small gift shop that sells some great local items to take away for gifts or souvenirs. The ANA staff are always very nice and very professional. The security staff are great too.
There's experienced counter lady who helped me . Very clean airport . Smoking rooms available inside and outside buildings.
Great place to fly from. They have hot coffee and snacks. Not much if you are looking for a full meal before or after your flight. Bus will pick you up from airport and they have taxi services. English is available. Bathrooms are clean and have trashcans. Piano is in there and the kids seem to like playing with it. Not much else.
Iwakuni Airport (IWK) is a regional airport located in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. It serves as a key transportation hub for the western part of the prefecture, particularly the cities of Iwakuni and Yanai, as well as the surrounding area. The airport shares its runways and facilities with Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, a United States Marine Corps base, making it a unique joint civil-military airport. Commercial flights are operated by regional carriers, primarily connecting to Tokyo's Haneda Airport. The airport is situated near the famous Kintai Bridge and the scenic Seto Inland Sea, drawing both business and leisure travelers.
Iwakuni Airport provides a range of services and facilities designed to accommodate passengers with varying needs. The terminal building offers several key amenities:
Based on flight schedules, the airport experiences its busiest periods around 1 PM and 2 PM. These times typically coincide with the arrival and departure of flights to and from Tokyo. Passengers should plan to arrive at least 60–90 minutes before their scheduled departure to allow sufficient time for check-in, security screening, and boarding, especially during these peak windows.
Iwakuni Airport is open daily, but hours may vary depending on flight schedules. The terminal building generally opens about an hour before the first departure and closes after the last arrival. Since the airport does not operate 24 hours, passengers are advised to confirm specific hours with their airline or check the airport’s official website for any temporary changes due to seasonal adjustments or special events.
The airport staff can assist with questions regarding facilities, parking, and accessibility. For airline-specific queries, passengers should contact their respective carrier directly.
Iwakuni Airport is accessible by car, taxi, and bus. A regular airport bus service connects the airport to Iwakuni Station and the city center, with journey times of approximately 15–20 minutes. Taxis are available outside the terminal, and rental car offices are located nearby. The airport’s free parking lot makes it convenient for those driving to the airport, with ample spaces for short- and long-term parking.
Iwakuni Airport plays a vital role in linking Yamaguchi Prefecture to Japan’s capital and other domestic destinations. The region is known for its historical sites, such as the Kintai Bridge and Iwakuni Castle, as well as its natural beauty along the Seto Inland Sea. The airport also serves as a gateway for travelers visiting the nearby Hiroshima Prefecture, with Hiroshima City accessible via train or car in about an hour. Despite its modest size, the airport provides essential connectivity for both residents and tourists, supporting local economic activity and tourism.
