Flying into that airport is always a unique experience, with the landscapes shifting dramatically. The airport itself is surprisingly modern, making the arrival process quite smooth. I recall the hustle and bustle of people excited to visit or to go home. It's a place filled with the sounds of many languages and the smells of different cuisines. Overall, it's a gateway to a region rich in history and culture.
It's not very pleasant experience. Taxi from the airport to the city is from 25 USD (main terminal) to 15 USD (meet and greet terminal to which you can get with free shuttle bus). If you walk out of the airport borders the price drops to just 3USD. On departure take into consideration very strict security measures. 1) you can't walk past security checkpoint, you must go by taxi which will stand in the queue as every bag is checked by a dog 2) at meet and greet you need to show a ticket and passport to the security guy 3) in the main terminal you go through first baggage check - than you go check in your luggage and go to the 4) passport control. After that you are almost there! There is coffee place and a duty free which has little Kurdish products or souvenirs and you can go to 5) another baggage check after which you will be at the gates area. There is one small cafe there and that's it, no duty free here. The announcements are barely understandable. A lot of infrastracture is damaged or dirty. Wifi sometimes Works, sometimes not. They don't accept digital boarding pass so you need to go to check in counter even if you travel with just hand baggage.
Its a great and small airport. Everything is going well and not any problems even the third time I visited Kurdistan. all the employees are nice.
A beautiful airport very close to the city center serves domestic and international flights. Security measures are very high. All the staff are very helpful. The duty free is good and reasonably cheap rates. It contains many cafes and small restaurants. nice experience
