Getting There

The only practical way to reach Sumtamon is by air from Jayapura's Sentani International Airport, with flights operated by carriers such as Trigana Air or Wings Air. The flight takes roughly 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the aircraft and weather. From the airport, the small settlement of Sumtamon is a short walk or ojek (motorcycle taxi) ride away. There is no scheduled bus service; visitors typically arrange transport through the airline or a local contact. Roads in the regency are basic dirt tracks, often impassable after rain, so air travel is the sole reliable connection. For flights originating elsewhere in Indonesia, you must first reach Jayapura via a domestic flight from Jakarta, Bali, or Surabaya, then transfer to Sentani Airport for the onward connection.

Inside the Terminal

The terminal at Lapangan Udara Sumtamon is as basic as it gets. It consists of a single-room building with a check-in counter, a waiting area with plastic chairs, and a small bathroom. Yahukimo itself lacks large tourist infrastructure, but appeals to adventurous travellers keen on trekking, village homestays, and witnessing a way of life that has changed little over centuries. The area has seen limited development due to its isolation; the airport is a key piece of infrastructure, enabling the delivery of food, medicine, and materials. Visitors must obtain a surat jalan (travel permit) from the police before entering Yahukimo, as it remains a controlled region.

Lapangan Udara Sumtamon is open only on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with flights arriving and departing around the times listed: Monday 1 am, Tuesday 7 am, Wednesday 5 am, Thursday 7 pm. These times are approximate and subject to change; confirm with the airline at least 24 hours in advance. Carry cash in Indonesian rupiah; the nearest ATM is in Jayapura. Dress in layers: the highlands can be cool in the morning (15°C) and warm by midday (25°C).
