Small (part of the charm), not very comfortable, many flights delayed or cancelled (especially Wings), not capable to have reliable information on screens despite having to manage 10 flights per day. Flight delayed more than 2H but decide not to board flights so that officials can brag about new lines openings
A small airport but quite comfortable. Bigger and nicer than Umbu Mehang Kunda Airport in Waingapu (Sumba Timur). The runway is longer so that a big airplane like Garuda could takes off and land here. The arrival lounge is air conditioned with restrooms at the corner. The ladies restroom has three rooms, but has problem on the door lock in each room (the door lock doesn't function well). I heard that some guests were locked when using this facility. The waiting room is full air-conditioned and quite spacious with comfy sofas and also a restroom but has the same problem on the door lock. Outside the building, you can find cafeterias that will serve you foods and drinks, also snacks. A spacious parking area but very hot as there is no big trees around. The authority should plant some trees here to reduce the heat. The good thing is that the staffs are friendly and helpful. They do the work properly to serve the customers/guests.
No, you can't expect something sophisticated like in the Hong Kong International Airport or Changi International Airport here - nothing like that. Tambolaka is a simple airport to cater not-so-many flights per day but hey - I didn't have anything to complain here - they did everything properly here (at least this is what I felt when I was around). When I first landed in this airport - the air was quite hot and perhaps the Aircond in the arrival lounge was not that cool (but to me it was okay), the conveyor belt of the bagage was so simple. But hey - I didn't lose any of my bagage here - it was safe enough, don't worry about it. The officers were nice, they're quite welcome. On departure - they have a proper Aircond lounge - even it's quite hot outsied but you will feel convenient waiting here to board the airplane. It was a clean and properly managed airport so don't worry too much on it - feel worry-free to come here :)
Not a good idea to leave your car at this airport parking lot. All the air from the 4 tires of my SUV was released. A good soul helped us to go find a compressor. Not sure if there is any security around to do patroling around the parking lot. First time experincing this at an airport.
Bandar Udara Lede Kalumbang, more commonly known as Tambolaka Airport (IATA: TMC), is a small domestic airport serving the town of Tambolaka and the western part of Sumba Island in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It is one of two commercial airports on the island, alongside Umbu Mehang Kunda Airport in Waingapu to the east. The airport is a key entry point for travellers heading to the surf spots, traditional villages, and rolling savannas of West Sumba. Flights are operated by Wings Air (a subsidiary of Lion Air) and NAM Air, connecting Tambolaka with Kupang (El Tari Airport) and sometimes Denpasar (Bali). Given its size, passengers should expect a simple, functional terminal with essential services rather than sprawling retail or dining options.
Lede Kalumbang Airport is located about 20 kilometres southwest of Tambolaka town centre, near the village of Weerame. The drive takes around 30–40 minutes by car, depending on road conditions. Taxis and ride-hailing services are available at the terminal, though it's wise to arrange a pickup in advance if you're staying at a resort or hotel. Many accommodations in West Sumba offer airport transfers. Alternatively, you can hire a private driver or take an ojek (motorcycle taxi) for a more adventurous ride. The road is mostly paved but can be narrow and winding in places. There is no public bus service directly to the airport, so pre-booking transport is recommended. For those driving themselves, a small parking area is available at the terminal.
Despite its modest size, the airport provides several essential amenities to ensure a comfortable journey for all passengers:
Sumba Island is one of Indonesia's most culturally and geographically unique destinations. Known for its dry, rolling hills and dramatic coastlines, West Sumba is famous for world-class surf breaks like Lakey Peak and Sumba Beach, as well as its traditional megalithic tombs and ikat weaving. The area is less developed than Bali but offers an authentic experience of ancient animist traditions still practised in villages such as Tarung and Ratenggaro. The landscape is a mix of savanna, limestone hills, and turquoise bays. Tourism is growing but remains low-key, centred on eco-resorts and surf camps. Tambolaka Airport serves as the main gateway for visitors heading to the western half of the island, including the popular resort area of Waeliti and the marine park of Wainyapu. The regional economy relies on agriculture (cassava, corn, cattle) and tourism.
