Kiwi Airstrip

Bandar Udara Kiwi is a remote airstrip in the highlands of Pegunungan Bintang Regency, Papua, Indonesia, serving as one of the few air links for villages along the Papua New Guinea border. Built on a narrow ridge surrounded by dense tropical forest, the strip operates only on select days, with most flights arriving in the early morning when weather conditions are most reliable. Getting There

Bandar Udara Kiwi is not connected by road to any major town. The nearest settlement with regular air service is Oksibil, about 20 kilometres east, but there is no road between them. Travelers typically reach Oksibil first via scheduled flights from Jayapura (approximately one hour on a Twin Otter). From Oksibil, a charter flight to Kiwi takes 10–15 minutes, weather permitting. Non-existent road infrastructure means the only alternative is a multi-day trek through steep, muddy terrain, crossing rivers and passing through villages where local guides are essential. Most passengers arrive on government or NGO charters, as commercial flights to Kiwi are rare. There is no public transport from the airstrip; locals usually meet incoming flights on foot or by motorbike.

Inside the Terminal

The terminal at Bandar Udara Kiwi is a single-story wooden building with a corrugated metal roof. Inside there is a waiting area with bench seating for about 15 people, a simple counter that serves as check-in and baggage drop, and a small shaded veranda. There is no electricity, so the interior relies on natural light from open windows. Toilets are basic pit latrines located behind the building, with no running water. No food or drink is available for purchase; passengers should bring their own supplies. Baggage handling is manual, with porters often employed to carry cargo to and from the aircraft. Kiwi itself is a small village that serves as a local market centre, where weekly flights bring in essential goods like salt, sugar, and medicine. Flights operate only on Monday through Thursday, with peak activity at 6 am on Monday and Thursday, 10 am Tuesday, and 7 am Wednesday. The airstrip is closed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There is no fuel available, so all aircraft must carry their own. As air travel is the only regular link, flights are often fully booked and subject to last-minute changes. The best way to arrange a flight is through the local government office in Oksibil or by contacting a charter company like Susi Air or Trigana Air. Visitors should carry all necessary supplies: drinking water, food, a first-aid kit, and adequate rain gear, as weather can turn within minutes.
