It is exceptionally neat and clean, making the overall environment very welcoming and easy on the eyes--a great start to any journey. What truly set the airport apart was its outstanding air quality. With one of the best AQI ratings I've encountered, the fresh and clean air during my time there was a pleasant surprise, ensuring a healthy travel experience. Only issue is, you will not get OLA UBER Taxi services etc... Pvt taxis are available and rate starts fron Rs. 750/-
It's a small airport with few amenities .But the best part of this airport is it's scenic beauty of pine trees and clear blue sky which gives Europe kind of a feeling.
Small flights are landed here passangers capacity is 40 at a time Runway is very short 1 or 2 flights are coming a day.
Shillong Airport, officially known as Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport but commonly referred to as Umroi Airport (or simply Shillong Airport), serves the capital city of Meghalaya, one of India's northeastern states. It is a domestic airport handling primarily regional flights from major Indian cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati. The airport is a key gateway for tourists heading to Shillong and the surrounding hill stations, as well as for business travellers and locals connecting to the rest of India. Given the mountainous terrain and limited road connectivity in the region, air travel is often the fastest option for reaching Meghalaya.
Shillong Airport is located at Nongrah Umroi, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the city centre of Shillong. The drive takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic and weather conditions. The airport sits at an elevation of approximately 887 metres (2,910 feet) above sea level, surrounded by rolling hills and pine forests typical of the East Khasi Hills district.
By Road: The most common way to reach the airport is by taxi or private car. Prepaid taxi counters are available at the terminal, and fares to Shillong city are fixed. Alternatively, you can hire a cab through ride-hailing apps like Ola or Uber, though availability may be limited. State-run buses do not directly serve the airport, but shared taxis (sumos) operate from the city to Umroi village, from where it is a short walk to the terminal.
By Rail: The nearest major railway station is Guwahati (103 km away), which is well-connected to the rest of India. From Guwahati, you can take a taxi (about 3.5 hours) or a bus to Shillong, then continue to the airport.
Parking: The airport has a small parking area for private vehicles. It is wheelchair-accessible and free for short stays, though there may be charges for longer parking. Given the limited space, it is advisable to arrange drop-off and pickup.
Shillong Airport is a compact terminal that offers essential amenities for passenger convenience:
There are no restaurants or cafés inside the terminal, but vending machines may be available for snacks and drinks. For meals, travellers can visit eateries just outside the airport or in Umroi village, a short walk away. Duty-free shopping is not available as it is a domestic terminal.
Shillong, often called the "Scotland of the East," is the capital of Meghalaya, a state known for its lush green landscapes, living root bridges, and heavy rainfall. The region is home to the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo tribes, each with distinct cultures and languages. Travellers flock to Shillong for its pleasant climate, scenic viewpoints like Shillong Peak and Lady Hydari Park, and nearby attractions such as Elephant Falls, Umiam Lake, and the Shillong Golf Course (one of the oldest in Asia). The city is also a base for exploring Cherrapunji (Sohra), one of the wettest places on earth, and the pristine Dawki River.
The airport itself lies in the Umroi area, known for its orange orchards and the Umroi Military Station. The terrain is hilly and forested, with tea gardens and pineapple plantations dotting the landscape. Flying into Shillong offers stunning aerial views of the Khasi Hills.
Given its small size and limited schedule, Shillong Airport provides a calm and efficient experience for passengers. Plan your trip accordingly, especially if arriving during peak hours or on a weekday.
