Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IATA: IXL) is the primary commercial airport serving Leh, the capital of the Ladakh Union Territory in northern India. Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,256 metres (10,682 feet) above sea level, it is one of the highest operational airports in the world. The airport is named after the 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, a revered Buddhist lama and former Indian politician.
Due to its extreme altitude and surrounding mountain terrain, the airport is used exclusively by high-performance aircraft capable of operating in thin air, such as the Airbus A319 and Boeing 737-700. It serves as a critical lifeline for the region, connecting Ladakh to major Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar. Passenger traffic is heavily seasonal: the summer months (May to September) see a surge in tourists visiting Ladakh’s spectacular landscapes and Buddhist monasteries, while the winter season sees significantly reduced flights due to harsh weather. Locals also rely on the airport for essential supplies and medical evacuations.
Leh Airport is located about 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) southeast of Leh’s main city centre, near the village of Saboo. The airport lies in the Indus River valley, flanked by the stark, barren peaks of the Trans-Himalaya. The drive from the airport to the central market area takes roughly 10–15 minutes by taxi or private vehicle.

Note: There are no ATMs inside the terminal, but a State Bank of India ATM is located about 500 metres away on the main road. Currency exchange is not available at the airport; bring enough Indian rupees for taxis and initial expenses.
Leh and the wider Ladakh region are renowned for their stark, dramatic high-desert landscapes, often called the "Land of High Passes." At an average altitude of 3,500 metres, the area is characterised by rugged mountains, deep gorges, crystal-clear rivers, and some of the most remote settlements in India. The culture is deeply influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, evident in the numerous monasteries (gompas) that dot the valleys, such as Thiksey, Hemis, and the iconic Leh Palace overlooking the city.
Tourists flock to Ladakh for trekking (including the famous Markha Valley), mountain biking, river rafting on the Indus and Zanskar rivers, and motorbiking expeditions on challenging passes like Khardung La (one of the world’s highest motorable roads), Chang La, and the recently opened Nyoma to Hanle route. The region is also a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts: the Hemis National Park is home to the rare snow leopard, Tibetan wolf, and argali sheep. The breathtaking Pangong Tso lake, made famous by films, lies about 140 km east of Leh and is accessible via a day trip.
Leh town itself offers a blend of Tibetan and Indian influences: narrow lanes lined with traditional houses, vibrant markets selling pashmina shawls and local apricots, and a collection of cafes catering to international travellers. The best time to visit is from June to September; winters (November to April) are harsh, with temperatures dropping well below freezing and many roads closed.
Pro tip: Flights to and from Leh are frequently delayed or cancelled due to weather – especially in winter. Always stay in touch with your airline for real-time updates, and consider purchasing flexible tickets.
Despite its size, Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport handles the demanding role of gateway to one of India’s most extraordinary regions with efficiency and a distinctly warm Ladakhi welcome.
