Retalhuleu Airport is located about 3 kilometres (2 miles) east of downtown Retalhuleu, just off the CA-2 highway, which runs along Guatemala's Pacific coast from the Mexican border to El Salvador. The airport's address is at the intersection of the CA-2 and the road to the town of San Sebastián. The city of Retalhueleu itself lies 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Pacific Ocean, near the border with the department of Suchitepéquez.

By road, the airport is accessible by taxi, private car, or shuttle. From Guatemala City, the drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours via the CA-2 west, passing through Escuintla and Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa. Local buses and minibuses also connect Retalhuleu to other towns along the coast, though passengers with luggage may find taxis more convenient. Parking at the airport is available, including a designated wheelchair-accessible car park. There is no public transport directly to the terminal, so pre-arranged transport is recommended.

One of the main attractions is Takalik Abaj, a pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site located about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the airport. This site is notable for its Olmec and Maya influences, with carved monuments and a museum. The Pacific coast beaches, such as Champerico and Las Lisas, are within an hour's drive and popular for surfing and relaxation. The nearby town of San Felipe is known for its colonial church and market.

The airport also serves business travellers involved in the region's agricultural exports, as well as workers commuting to offshore oil platforms in the Pacific. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts may visit the nearby wetlands of the Manchón-Guamuchal National Park, a protected mangrove ecosystem.

Operating hours vary, but peak activity typically occurs in the evening, especially around 9 pm and 10 pm, when services to Guatemala City are often scheduled.
