An amazing welcome for us and our little C150, a former Flying Club trainer aircraft. We had pre-planned for a study tour, requiring onward transport to different places. All was made possible by the loan of bikes to get the nearby train station, from which trains and buses departed on schedule to anywhere you could wish. All the photos, except en route aerial shots of Wilhelmshaven naval docks, were taken within a range of about 25 miles of our base at Nordholz, and cost a total of 9 Euros each for transport, plus some pedal power, for the whole week. There is plenty of runway despite advertised length. We camped on site, even borrowing a tent to avoid overloading the aircaft with camping gear. The club room has some cooking and shower facilities, and there is Wifi thoughout the site. The strip and club are associated with the adjacent (last remaining) German naval airport, hence a regular, guaranteed daily (and night-time!) airshow! The club has a selection of interesting aircraft, including the last remaining, flying, Putzer Elster. Every morning a Britten-Norman Islander departs with mail and passengers for Helgoland (runway too short for me to chance in the Cessna). We could not have been made more welcome. With special thanks to Corinna for making it all possible. It was a challenging trip, and a big "ask", but she sorted it all out for us.
Good stop for fuel, military club. Helpful
Super nice people. And even though it was Friday the 13th, I was able to get an early flight over to the island. I love the 13th! The welcome here was warm, and parking is convenient! With the combo ticket, you get reimbursed for the taxi ride back to the airport! I think that's great. And the place is also very quaint see photo
A fantastic sightseeing flight over Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven, and Neuwerk was arranged at short notice. A great pilot who shines with information and knowledge of the region. Highly recommended, and see you next time.
Sonderlandeplatz Nordholz-Spieka is a special landing field (Sonderlandeplatz) located in the Wurster Nordseekuste region of Lower Saxony, Germany. Unlike a commercial passenger airport, this airstrip serves general aviation: it is used by private pilots, flight schools, glider enthusiasts, and ultralight aircraft. The field also supports parachute jumping and model aircraft flying. While it does not host scheduled airline services, it plays an important role in the recreational and training aviation network along the North Sea coast. The airfield is operated by the Segelfliegergruppe Nordholz e.V., a local gliding club, and is a hub for regional aviation activities.
The airstrip is situated near the village of Spieka, approximately 5 kilometres northwest of the town of Nordholz. It lies in the district of Cuxhaven, about 20 kilometres south of the city of Cuxhaven and 25 kilometres north of Bremerhaven. The surrounding landscape is flat and agricultural, typical of the North Sea coastal marshlands. Access is primarily by road via the Bundesstrasse 73, then local roads to the airfield. Public transport is limited: the nearest railway station is Nordholz on the line between Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven, from which a taxi or bus (lines serving the region) can be taken. Cycling is also feasible using the region’s extensive network of coastal and rural bike paths. Drivers can follow signs to "Flugplatz Nordholz-Spieka" from the main roads.
Sonderlandeplatz Nordholz-Spieka provides basic amenities for pilots and visitors. The car park and entrance are wheelchair-accessible, making the airfield inclusive for travellers with mobility needs. A toilet is available on site. Wi-Fi connectivity is offered, though its coverage and speed may vary. The airfield is noted as LGBTQ+ friendly, reflecting an open and welcoming environment. As a small general aviation field, there is no café, restaurant, or fuel station; visitors should bring their own refreshments and confirm fuel availability with the operator if needed. The clubhouse or pilot lounge may offer basic seating and information. Prior to visiting, it is advisable to contact the airfield for any specific facility details or operational requirements.
The Wurster Nordseekuste region is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea, renowned for its tidal flats, mudflats, and rich birdlife. The coast attracts nature lovers, birdwatchers, and hikers who explore the protected national parks. The nearby cities of Cuxhaven and Bremerhaven offer maritime attractions: Cuxhaven’s "Alte Liebe" harbour and beach promenade, and Bremerhaven’s German Maritime Museum, Klimahaus, and the historic emigration centre. The area is also famous for its cycling routes, such as the North Sea Cycle Route (EuroVelo 12), and water sports like sailing and kite surfing. The airfield itself often hosts gliding competitions, fly-ins, and aviation events, drawing enthusiasts to the flat, thermic-friendly landscape. The region’s coastal climate, seafood cuisine, and quiet villages make it a relaxing destination for both aviation and tourism.
Sonderlandeplatz Nordholz-Spieka is not open every day; its operating hours vary and are typically weekends or by arrangement for flight operations. Visitors should check the official website or call ahead before travelling. The website (https://www.sfg-nordholz.de/flugplatzdaten.html) provides current data in German, including contact details and possibly schedule information. The airfield can be reached by phone at 04741 8384. Parking is available on site, likely free of charge. As a private airfield, prior permission (PPR) may be required for landing, and visiting pilots should coordinate with the operator. For those simply wishing to observe or explore the area, a quick enquiry ensures a smooth visit. Given the limited facilities, it is wise to plan accordingly with supplies and transport. The airstrip offers a genuine glimpse into German general aviation against a backdrop of the serene North Sea coast.
