Quit relax. Nice service. Good drinks. Good parking.
Friendly place for foreign pilots
We used the free parking space for our motorhome. With a slightly sloping location, we spent a very peaceful night on stable ground. Thank you for still offering such spaces.
JadeWeser Airport (EDWI) is a regional airfield located in Sande, a municipality in the district of Friesland, Lower Saxony, Germany. Despite its modest size, the airport plays a key role in supporting general aviation, flight training, and business travel in the northwestern part of the country. It serves as a gateway for private pilots, flying clubs, and corporate aviation, offering an alternative to larger commercial airports such as Bremen or Hamburg. The airport is also used by the local industry, including logistics and offshore support, given its proximity to the JadeWeserPort container terminal in Wilhelmshaven. While it does not handle scheduled commercial passenger flights, it is a vital asset for the region's aviation needs, providing facilities for aircraft maintenance, charter operations, and recreational flying.
JadeWeser Airport is situated about 3 kilometers south of Sande's town center, roughly 10 kilometers southwest of Wilhelmshaven and 15 kilometers northeast of Varel. The airport is easily accessible by car via the B436 federal road, which connects to the A29 motorway linking to Oldenburg and Bremen. For those relying on public transport, the nearest railway station is Sande, located on the Wilhelmshaven–Oldenburg line. From there, a short taxi ride or a local bus service can get you to the airport. The airport's location near the North Sea coast makes it a convenient starting point for flights to the East Frisian Islands (such as Wangerooge, Spiekeroog, or Langeoog) or along the Wadden Sea coastline. For visitors arriving by car, the airport offers free on-site parking lots, a significant advantage for pilots and passengers.
Despite its regional nature, JadeWeser Airport provides a range of amenities designed to ensure a comfortable experience for pilots, passengers, and visitors. The terminal building is wheelchair-accessible, with dedicated parking spaces and an entrance suitable for those with mobility challenges. Restrooms are available on-site, and free Wi-Fi enables connectivity for business or leisure needs. The airport features a well-maintained free parking lot, as well as additional on-site parking options, making it easy to leave a vehicle for short or extended stays. While there is no large restaurant or hotel on the premises, visitors will find the essentials: seating areas, information boards, and friendly staff. For aviation enthusiasts, there is a small observation area near the apron. The airport also houses a flight school and aircraft maintenance services, underscoring its role as a hub for general aviation.
Sande and the surrounding Friesland region are steeped in maritime history and natural beauty. The nearby city of Wilhelmshaven is home to the JadeWeserPort, Germany's deepest container port, which serves as a major hub for international shipping, especially for large container vessels. The region is also known for the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which attracts birdwatchers, hikers, and nature lovers. Tourists often use the area as a base to explore the East Frisian Islands, accessible by ferry from ports like Harlesiel or Schillig. The airport's location makes it ideal for private pilots flying into the islands or coastal destinations. Additionally, the region has a strong links to the German Navy (Wilhelmshaven is a major naval base) and to renewable energy, with numerous wind farms offshore. The modest size of JadeWeser Airport ensures a calm, uncrowded travel experience, contrasting with the hustle of larger commercial airports.
JadeWeser Airport is not open daily; operating hours are typically limited, so it is essential to check ahead. The airport's peak hours tend to fall around 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM, likely coinciding with flight training schedules or regular charter movements. For inquiries, the airport can be reached by phone at +49 4421 202333. The official website (http://www.edwi.info/) provides further details on services, weather conditions, and contact information. Remember that this is a general aviation airfield, so there are no passenger terminals with shops or extensive services—plan accordingly. For fueling or maintenance, the airport offers AVGAS and Jet A1 (subject to availability), but these are services for pilots, not passengers. Overall, JadeWeser Airport is a functional and welcoming facility for those traveling by private aircraft in northwestern Germany.
