Small airport with a slightly chaotic vibe. Outside the terminal there's a lack of pavement space for those waiting for the bus and those who are trying to walk past for the car park. There's nowhere to fill up a water bottle, aside from the toilets. There are only a few facilities past security, and for those heading to non-Schengen countries, there's only a single cafe after the passport check. Far too few seats for passengers waiting at the gates. And at the gate they were 'boarding' us way before the plane was ready. That meant we were all moved to the outside balcony area for a significant time where there are no seats and no shade. On a really sunny day that can be quite difficult. On the plus side, a small airport has its advantages and I was through check-in and security quickly. The automated luggage check-in machines work really well so I didn't have to wait at all. I arrived from Augsburg via a direct RE train and a local bus. Simple to use with my Deutschland-Ticket. The bus could go on a slightly more direct route from the station, but it was on time according to the timetable, so I can't complain too much.
Airport is being severely overcrowded to what I can only assume increase profit margins at the expense of customers and security. On 05/10 four flights left to non-Schengen countries within one hour, with only four border control officers present, leading to complete chaos at the airport. No management of crowds whatsoever led to yelling and pushing. Several staff members of the airport that were addressed directly did not feel responsible for dealing with the situation, accusing passengers of wanting to fly cheaply.
Absolutely horrible passport control line. 4 full flights (more than 700 people) took off in a 20 minute window and they had only 4 counters for all these people. The waiting area is tiny, so the queue extended down the stairs and even into the duty free shop! I've never seen such a ridiculous scene before. I almost missed my flight because of this, even though I came to the airport quite early. Actually I would have missed the flight, but they had to wait, because literally everyone else was also in the same situation. Otherwise the plane would have to fly almost empty. Ryanair was on time, but still got delayed because of passport control! Also terrible WiFi and barely any mobile signal inside the building. This airport desperately needs an upgrade. It's also twice as far from Munich city center compared to MUC airport, so definitely avoid it, unless you get a very cheap flight that could be worth the discomfort.
Been to 100+ airports, a rather average airport. It's a very small airport and it's hard to get to it when you can't get there by car or taxi. The bus connection to the local train stations are like every hour so it's not really great and it's an hour walk from the train stations. There are some long distance buses connection the airport. Parking is also very expensive when you stay longer than then free 10mins, that is actually nice! Only had to use the check-in once and it was a disaster because the two lines for one counter were just big chaos. Security is usually pretty fast but can depend on the time of the day. The gates are pretty small so things can get pretty crowded and food options are limited. Announcements are really difficult to understand because of the acoustics in that one big hall of airport. It can also get pretty muggy in summer! Heads up that the airport closes between 11pm and 3am. Not my favorite airport but it does the job with some nice Ryanair connections which mostly are pretty on schedule.
Memmingen Airport (IATA: FMM), also known as Allgäu Airport Memmingen, serves as a major hub for low-cost carriers in southern Germany. Located in the Bavarian region of Swabia, it primarily handles scheduled and charter flights to leisure destinations across Europe, including Spain, Italy, Greece, and the UK. The airport began its commercial operations in the early 2000s after being converted from a former military airbase (Memmingerberg Air Base). Today, it is a key alternative to Munich Airport for travellers heading to the Allgäu, Lake Constance, or the Bavarian Alps.
The airport is compact and efficient, designed for quick check-ins and departures. It has a single terminal building with straightforward navigation. Passenger numbers have grown steadily, making it one of the busier regional airports in Germany, especially during holiday seasons.
Memmingen Airport is situated in Memmingerberg, about 4.5 km east of Memmingen city centre and approximately 110 km west of Munich. It lies within the Allgäu region, known for its rolling hills, dairy farms, and proximity to the Alps. The airport is well-connected by road and coach services.
The airport is accessible via the A96 motorway (Munich–Memmingen–Lindau) at exit 28 (Memmingen-Ost). Driving from Munich takes about 1.5 hours, from Stuttgart about 2 hours, and from Lake Constance around 1 hour. On-site paid parking is available with short-term and long-term options, including a wheelchair-accessible car park.
Several long-distance coach operators serve the airport, connecting it to cities such as Munich, Ulm, Augsburg, and Friedrichshafen. Many of these services are tailored to flight schedules, making them a popular choice for budget travellers. Additionally, local buses run between Memmingen train station and the airport.
The nearest railway station is Memmingen Hauptbahnhof, about 10 minutes away by taxi or bus. From there, regional trains connect to major hubs like Munich, Ulm, and Kempten. Passengers can take bus route 2 or 810 from the station to the airport.
Memmingen Airport provides a range of essential services for passengers, focusing on accessibility and convenience.
The terminal is fully wheelchair-accessible. Designated parking spaces are available close to the entrance, and all doors and toilets are equipped for wheelchair users. Wheelchair rental is offered free of charge – passengers should inform their airline or the airport in advance.
Left luggage facilities are available for a fee, allowing passengers to store bags during layovers or while exploring the region. The storage is located within the terminal.
Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal. No password is required; simply connect to the network. The connection is sufficient for browsing and messaging.
The airport has baby changing tables in both male and female toilets, making it family-friendly.
Clean and well-maintained toilets are located in the arrivals and departures areas. Accessible toilets are clearly marked.
While the airport has a café and a small snack bar, options are limited compared to larger airports. Passengers may prefer to eat before arriving or bring their own snacks. Vending machines are also available.
A small duty-free shop offers travel essentials, souvenirs, and local products such as Allgäu cheese and beer. A newsagent sells magazines and last-minute travel items.
The Allgäu region, where Memmingen Airport is situated, is one of Germany's most scenic areas. It is famous for its picturesque landscapes: green meadows, rolling hills, and the northern foothills of the Alps. The region is a popular destination for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and skiing in winter. The nearby Alps offer world-class ski resorts such as Oberstdorf, a short drive south.
Lake Constance (Bodensee), about 60 km west of the airport, is a major tourist attraction. It offers water sports, boat tours, and visits to historic towns like Lindau, Konstanz, and Meersburg. The lake also hosts the famous Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen.
In winter, the Allgäu Christmas markets, especially in Memmingen itself, draw visitors. The city of Memmingen has a well-preserved medieval old town with a town hall, churches, and the unique “Sieben Schaben” fountain. The region is also known for its dairy products, particularly Allgäu Emmental and Bergkäse cheeses, as well as beer from local breweries.
Cultural attractions include the nearby castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, though these are closer to Füssen (about 1 hour drive). However, many visitors choose to fly into Memmingen for cheaper access to these iconic sites.
Pro tip: Since the airport is small, arrive no earlier than 2 hours before your flight. There are limited seating and services outside of flight times.
