Got intercepted by aliens nice airport though 10/10 would get kidnapped again (unfortunately no ryanair)
I first visited this airfield around 1988 and immediately felt at home. Since then, I've been back on and off, mostly for events and skydiving. Since there are always newer pictures of the airfield appearing here, I've selected a few from the past for the "old hands" and nostalgic flying enthusiasts. These are old pictures, not digitized or edited... As you can see, back then there were no "GoPro" cameras, etc. People were still jumping with Super 8 cameras, and some colleagues were using much larger and heavier equipment.
The air sports club's events are always worthwhile. Plus, I'm almost always lucky with the weather. Thanks to the organizers and exhibitors/drinks and barbecue stands Great
There is always a queue, delay or cancellation to and from this airport. Every single time! I have never experienced arriving or leaving the airport on time and I have unfortunately had to use it regularly for 50 years to and from different destinations. This time the journey to was postponed 4 times (from 0605 to 1400) the return was postponed by 30 min.
Flensburger Flughafen is a regional airport situated in the far north of Germany, just a few kilometres from the Danish border. It primarily serves general aviation, including private pilots, flight training schools, and recreational flying. The airport is not a hub for scheduled commercial airlines; instead, it caters to charter flights, business aviation, and the local flying community. Its single runway and compact terminal are well suited to the light aircraft and gliders that regularly use the field. Despite its modest size, the airport plays a practical role in connecting the Flensburg area with the wider region and offers an alternative entry point for visitors who prefer to travel by private or small aircraft.
Flensburger Flughafen lies approximately 5 kilometres north of Flensburg city centre, near the village of Wees. The airport is easily reached by car via the B199 federal road, which links Flensburg to the Danish border at Kruså. From central Flensburg, the drive typically takes around ten minutes. Parking is available on site, and the car park includes designated spaces accessible for wheelchair users.
Public transport options are limited. A local bus service (line 3) stops within walking distance of the terminal, but timetables should be checked in advance as services can be infrequent. Taxis are readily available from Flensburg’s main railway station and other central points; the journey costs around €15–€20. For those arriving by bicycle, the airport is connected to the region’s cycle path network, making it a viable option for active travellers.
Nearby cities include Flensburg itself (population approximately 90,000) and the Danish city of Sønderborg, about 30 kilometres to the north-east. The airport is well placed for exploring both sides of the border, as well as the scenic Flensburg Fjord coastline.
Flensburger Flughafen is a small facility, so travellers should not expect extensive services. The terminal provides the following confirmed amenities:
These facilities make the airport reasonably navigable for passengers with reduced mobility. There are no shops, restaurants, or cafés inside the terminal. Travellers are advised to bring their own food and drinks for the journey. Seating is available in the waiting area. The airport does not have a dedicated lounge. For flight planning or refuelling, pilots should contact the airport operator directly. Wi‑Fi availability is not confirmed; it is best to assume none is provided.
The airport’s peak hours tend to be in the early afternoon (around 2 pm and 3 pm), when flight training and private arrivals are most frequent. Outside these times, the airport is generally quiet.
Flensburg is a historic port city situated at the inner end of the Flensburg Fjord, a narrow inlet of the Baltic Sea. The region is known for its strong maritime character, with a bustling harbour, old shipyards, and a thriving sailing culture. Flensburg also has a significant Danish minority, reflected in bilingual street signs and Danish‑German cultural institutions. The nearby coastline is popular for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and other water sports, especially around the beaches of Solitüde and Glücksburg.
Inland, the rolling hills of the Schleswig‑Holstein landscape offer excellent cycling and hiking opportunities. The area is dotted with thatched‑roof farmhouses, manor estates, and nature reserves. The city’s historic Altstadt (old town) features cobbled streets, traditional shops, and a lively culinary scene. Further south, the University of Flensburg and the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences bring a youthful energy to the city.
For visitors arriving by air, the airport provides a convenient gateway to both German and Danish attractions. The Danish island of Als, with Sønderborg as its main town, is a short drive away and offers its own medieval castle and coastal trails. The Flensburg Fjord itself is a popular destination for boat trips and fishing.
When planning a flight to or from Flensburger Flughafen, always confirm availability in advance. For general inquiries about services, aircraft parking, or hangarage, the airport office can be reached by phone or via the website’s contact form. There are no customs or immigration facilities, so the airport is not suitable for flights arriving from non‑Schengen countries without prior clearance.
