Arrived on 31/08/2012 from EGSX via LFOH. Airfield deserted and no ATC at all. I had to make blind calls after being handed over from Iroise. No Taxis, no bus, nothing. Had to phone the Hotel (this in itself was an epic to explain as their English was worse than my French) and asked them to send a Taxi for me - waited 20 minutes. Departed the next day. Airfield manned by a single person with very limited English doubling as ATC, fire tender driver and manager. Charged 5EU landing fee and 10EU for overnight parking. Got my logbook stamped, but no receipt and still no ATC upon departure. A very picturesque Island and worth flying around the coastline.
We've been on vacation to Ouessant twice from Aix-en-Provence in a microlight (A32L). Each time, we had exceptionally favorable weather. Please read the last comment carefully; France must not be seen as incompetent and unwelcoming. Don't forget that foreign tourism, especially those arriving by private plane, adds value to the island, the land in question, and its residents. The financial aspect and the image France projects, already rather shabby in Paris, must not be negative in the provinces and Brittany. Service must be impeccable, English must be maintained with regard to AFIS, as must infrastructure (runway, radio, tower, parking, green spaces, vestibule, catering, transportation, etc.). Advice to elected officials and managers: be committed and consistent, and understand the importance of doing the right thing.
A warm and friendly welcome that matches the superb scenery seen on approach, a small, perfectly maintained airport with a perfect runway and a parking area equipped with mooring cables, which is very practical when it's windy... which is often the case. In a word: superb!
