Great system to get passengers through the airport. Staff friendly and helpful and spoke enough English. Food options were available throughout, all the same were on offer, tuna baguettes were fresh and delicious, as was the coffee
What happens when you put together staff with facilities insufficient for the modern day. Over the airport are signs about how eco-friendly they are. What I noticed throughout my time here: * Staff insisted on giving me a plastic bag for my liquids which were already in an identical one * I refrained from buying water since I had assumed that this eco-friendly airport would have a water source across the joke of a security queue. I had to leave the queue because the 'fountain' only gave slow drabs of water so that I had to leave for my flight before I could get anywhere near the front. * The queue for the security and gate are nothing to laugh about (I have attached a photo)
Security area complete disaster as you have to unpack your bag while moving along a conveyor belt hoping you have enough trays to take everything out into as you find out all the extra items they want taken out that other places don't. Departure area wildly overcrowded with maybe enough seats for a single flight but there are 4 gates. A single water fountain that dispenses drips of water once you are through security. Queuing area for passport control partially outside, hope that it's warm when you arrive. Checkin desks were slow but only because the baggage belt backed up so they couldn't take bags from people. A delight to leave.
Its such a convenient local airport - its small, run by locals who want to help skiers to the Alps and its such a change to the big automated airports. City to Chambrey, its like flying from another time. Enjoy the convenience...
Aéroport Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc is a compact regional airport located in Viviers-du-Lac, serving as a primary gateway to the French Alps for leisure travellers. Unlike major international hubs, this airport focuses heavily on seasonal charter and low-cost flights, particularly during the winter ski season. Its main users are holidaymakers heading to world-famous ski resorts such as Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens, and Les Trois Vallées, as well as summer visitors drawn to the mountains and lakes of Savoie. The airport handles a relatively small number of passengers compared to larger French airports, but its location makes it a convenient entry point for the Alps. During peak winter months, flights arrive from across Europe, including the UK, Netherlands, Belgium, and Scandinavia. The airport’s single terminal is designed for efficiency, with quick check-in and baggage claim processes.
Chambéry Airport sits at the foot of the Bauges mountains, roughly 10 kilometres north of Chambéry city centre and about 85 kilometres from Geneva. The nearest large city is Lyon, approximately 115 kilometres to the west. The airport is well connected to the region’s road network via the A41 autoroute, making it easy to reach by car. Travellers driving from Chambéry take the A41 towards Geneva and exit at ‘Aéroport Chambéry – Savoie’. Parking includes short-term and long-term lots, as well as a designated wheelchair-accessible car park. For those without a car, shuttle buses and taxis operate from the terminal. Several ski transfer companies offer direct connections to resorts, particularly during winter. The closest railway station is Chambéry-Challes-les-Eaux, which is a 15-minute drive away and links to TGV services from Paris, Lyon, and other cities. From there, a taxi or local bus can reach the airport. Geneva Airport is a popular alternative for travellers, offering more flight options and train connections via Annecy.
The terminal at Chambéry Airport is compact, but provides essential amenities for passengers. The airport is fully wheelchair-accessible: the car park, entrance, and toilets are designed for ease of use by travellers with reduced mobility. Standard toilets are available in the departure and arrival areas. On-site services include car rental desks (major agencies such as Avis, Hertz, and Europcar), tourist information kiosks, and a small café or snack bar (hours may vary with flight schedules). There is no hotel on the airport premises, but several accommodations exist in nearby Viviers-du-Lac and Chambéry. Free Wi-Fi is not guaranteed, but some seating areas offer charging points. The airport lacks extensive shopping; travellers should plan to purchase any essentials before arrival. For passengers with special assistance needs, it is advisable to notify the airline in advance to ensure smooth service.
The Savoie region is internationally renowned for its alpine landscapes and outdoor activities. In winter, the area becomes a playground for skiers and snowboarders, with some of the highest and most snow-sure slopes in Europe. The Three Valleys (Les Trois Vallées) ski area, accessible from Chambéry Airport, is the largest linked ski domain in the world. Beyond winter sports, the region offers summer hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, and water sports on the scenic Lac du Bourget – the largest natural lake in France. The historic city of Chambéry, once capital of the Duchy of Savoy, features a charming old town with its famous Elephant Fountain and the Château des Ducs de Savoie. Food lovers enjoy Savoyard cuisine, including fondue, raclette, and tartiflette, along with local wines from the Savoie wine region. Aix-les-Bains, a lakeside spa town, is a short drive away and known for its thermal baths. The airport’s proximity to both mountains and cities makes it a strategic hub for exploring the northern French Alps.
Chambéry Airport operates on a seasonal schedule, typically open only during periods of high demand – primarily winter ski season (December to April) and some summer flights (June to September). It is not open daily year-round; passengers should check flight schedules carefully. Peak traffic hours at the terminal are around 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm, corresponding to arrival and departure waves. For the most accurate and current information, visit the official website: http://www.chambery-airport.com/ . The airport can be reached by phone at +33 4 79 54 49 54. There is no 24-hour operation; the terminal opens approximately two hours before the first flight and closes after the last arrival. Luggage storage is not available on site. For those waiting for extended periods, the café offers limited seating. Given the airport’s small size, recommended arrival time is 1.5 to 2 hours before departure for European flights. All standard security procedures apply.
