The journey by road takes around 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic. The main access route is via the departmental road that connects San Gil to the town of Barichara and further south. There is no direct public bus service to the airport terminal; most travellers arrange private transfers or take a taxi from San Gil. Taxis can be hailed in the town centre or arranged through hotels; the fare is typically negotiable and reasonable. Renting a car is another option, but parking at the airport is limited to a small unpaved lot. For those coming from Bucaramanga (about 115 km north), the drive takes roughly 2.5 hours via the well-maintained highway that winds through the scenic Chicamocha Canyon, followed by local roads to the airport. The nearest alternative commercial airport is Palonegro International Airport (BGA) near Bucaramanga, which offers domestic flights from Bogotá, Medellín, and other major cities.
