Getting There

The airport lies approximately 10 kilometres south of Tashkurgan town, a short taxi ride that takes about 15 minutes. Taxis are available at the town’s main square and near the bus station; negotiate the fare beforehand—a typical cost is around 30–50 RMB. From Kashgar city, the distance is about 300 kilometres along the Karakoram Highway (G314). The road is paved but passes through high mountain passes, including the 4,700-metre Subash Pass, and can be affected by weather. Driving time is roughly four to six hours. Shared minibuses run from Kashgar’s bus station to Tashkurgan town, with several departures daily. Flights from Kashgar to Tashkurgan Khunjerab are the quickest option, taking 50 minutes, and are operated by China Southern Airlines. If flying into the region from elsewhere, the main hub is Kashgar Airport, which connects to Urumqi and other Chinese cities. From Kashgar Airport, you can take a connecting flight or arrange ground transport.

Inside the Terminal

The terminal building is single-storey, bright, and clearly new. On arrival, passengers deplane via stairs and walk a short distance to the entrance. The check-in area has three counters and a single security lane that processes passengers quickly due to low traffic. The waiting area offers seating for roughly 100 people and large windows overlooking the runway and mountains. Wheelchair-accessible entrance, car park, and toilet are confirmed, with a dedicated accessible toilet available. However, there is no café, restaurant, or vending machine. No drinking water is available beyond what might be in the restroom sink. The arrival hall has a baggage claim carousel and a small area where friends or drivers can wait. The pass is open only from April to November due to snow. The surrounding Pamir landscape is stark and magnificent: barren valleys, snow-capped peaks, and high-altitude grasslands grazed by yaks and sheep. Travellers come for trekking, photography, and the chance to experience one of the world’s most remote inhabited regions. Permits are required for foreigners visiting Tashkurgan and the Khunjerab Pass; these can be arranged through tour operators or at the police station in Tashkurgan town. The airport has made this once-difficult destination accessible to a wider range of visitors, though the low frequency of flights means that planning is essential.
