I knew Rondonopolis as one of the large cities in Mato Grosso, but the airport is small for the size of the city. Currently, the only operator is Azul. I noticed that renovations are being carried out on the aircraft apron, so there may be changes soon... The airport does not have any snack bar or means of purchasing food.
The airport is completely devoid of food service facilities; it doesn't even have vending machines, and worse, there isn't a single restaurant or snack bar to even get a simple coffee. The number of seats before the boarding area is less than 50 for all passengers and visitors. Assessment as of June 2023.
Small, calm and quiet airport with one daily round-trip flight between Viracopos Airport and Rondonopolis Airport, operating in the early morning hours with Azul Airlines. During rainy periods, it is common for flights to be cancelled due to bad weather.
The airport infrastructure is undergoing renovations and will be improved; it's organized and new flights have started.
Aeroporto de Rondonópolis Maestro Marinho Franco (IATA: ROO, ICAO: SBRD) is a domestic airport serving the city of Rondonópolis and the surrounding agricultural heartland of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Named after the renowned local musician Maestro Marinho Franco, the airport is a key gateway for business travellers, agribusiness professionals, and tourists exploring the southern part of the state. It handles regular scheduled flights to major Brazilian hubs, primarily São Paulo (Congonhas and Guarulhos) and occasionally to other destinations such as Cuiabá and Brasília, operated by airlines like Azul, Gol, and LATAM.
The airport is classified as a domestic facility and does not offer international flights. It is owned and managed by the consortium Centroeste Airports, which oversees several airports in central-western Brazil. The terminal is compact but functional, designed to handle the steady flow of passengers travelling for commerce, agriculture, or leisure. Given its regional importance, the airport plays a vital role in connecting Mato Grosso’s interior to the rest of the country.
Rondonópolis Airport is located approximately 16 kilometres northeast of Rondonópolis city centre, along the MT-270 highway. The airport’s address is Rodovia MT-270, S/N – Zona Rural, Rondonópolis – MT, 78700-970. The drive from downtown typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes by car, depending on traffic.
By Car and Taxi Passengers arriving by car will find a wheelchair-accessible car park directly in front of the terminal. The parking area is well signed and offers spaces for both short and long stays. Taxis are readily available at the taxi stand outside the arrivals area; the fare to the city centre is generally fixed or metered. Ride-hailing services such as Uber and 99 also operate in Rondonópolis and can be used to reach the airport.
By Bus Public bus routes connecting the airport to central Rondonópolis exist but are limited. The municipality operates a bus line that stops near the terminal, but schedules may be infrequent. Many travellers prefer to arrange private transfers or drive themselves.
Nearby Cities The airport serves not only Rondonópolis but also nearby towns and farming communities. The city of Cuiabá, the state capital, is about 218 kilometres to the north-west (roughly a 2.5-hour drive). The city of Primavera do Leste is about 120 kilometres east, and the municipality of Jaciara is approximately 60 kilometres south-east.
The airport’s proximity to the key agricultural regions of the state makes it a convenient arrival point for visitors to farms and agribusiness operations in the surrounding countryside.

Rondonópolis is one of the fastest-growing cities in Mato Grosso and a major hub for agribusiness. The region is famous for its large-scale production of soybeans, corn, cotton, and beef. The city sits on the banks of the Vermelho River and lies in the transition zone between the Cerrado savanna and the Amazon rainforest, offering a mix of flat plains and rolling hills.
The local economy is heavily driven by agriculture and related industries, including grain storage, fertiliser production, and machinery manufacturing. The city also serves as a logistics centre, with major highways linking it to the rest of Brazil and the Port of Santos for exports.
For visitors, the region offers ecotourism opportunities in the nearby Serra do Petrópolis (Serra de São Vicente) area, including waterfalls, hiking trails, and horseback riding. The Chapada dos Guimarães National Park, about 200 km north, is a popular weekend destination with dramatic cliffs, canyons, and caves. The city itself has a vibrant cultural scene, including museums, traditional festivals (such as the Festa do Peão de Rondonópolis), and a growing culinary reputation centred on grilled meats and regional dishes.
Business travellers coming for agricultural trade or commodity conferences will find the airport a convenient entry point. Leisure travellers use it to explore Mato Grosso’s natural attractions without having to transit through the larger and busier Cuiabá Airport.
Airport Hours The airport is not open 24 hours a day. It operates according to flight schedules, typically opening around two hours before the first departure and closing after the last arrival. Passengers should plan to arrive at least 1.5 hours before domestic flights.
