Essendon Fields Airport is a pleasure to use. The staff are always smiling, professional, and helpful. The cleanliness of the airport is commendable. My only wish is for slightly larger and more accessible parking spaces, but overall, this is a smooth airport experience.

A special mention to both of the the boys Peter and Nathan..thank you kindly! I hope you could fix the seat in the plane?? Still not sure what happened.. I'm sure you have fixed it. I'm doing really well....slowly but getting there. Not driving yet .. Exercising daily and getting back on my feet, I still use the stick, just for balance, I do not want to end up going backwards!! All positive Here I just have to learn to slow down...I'm so keen to make a full recovery. Great experience!!! All the staff were friendly. From the superb instructors to the great guys at the reception!!! They all exhibited every sense of professionalism. I left my headphones on site and it was ensured I got it back in piece.
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Cheers EF team.
I usually come here as my mother in law likes to buy from LaManna . Since we're there I'll sometimes go to Coles to shop to pick up essentials . It can be hectic depending when you shop but lately it's been quiet due to the year that we've had plus restrictions...
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We'd love to know more about your experience and the reason for your rating. Please email marketing@ef.com.au. Cheers, EF team
Essendon Fields Airport, located in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon Fields, is one of Australia's oldest continually operating airports. Originally opened in 1921 as a Royal Australian Air Force base, it served as Melbourne's primary airport until the opening of Tullamarine Airport in 1970. Today, Essendon Fields is a bustling centre for general aviation, corporate and charter flights, flight training, and aircraft maintenance. While it no longer hosts regular scheduled commercial airline services, its terminal remains active with charter operators, private jets, and occasional regional flights. The airport is also home to a major business park and aviation-related industries, making it a key transport node for Melbourne's north-western suburbs.
Essendon Fields Airport sits approximately 11 kilometres north-west of Melbourne's central business district, in the suburb of Essendon Fields. The airport is bordered by the Tullamarine Freeway to the west and the Moonee Ponds Creek to the east, providing easy road access. The terminal address is 7 English Street, Essendon Fields.
The airport is well connected via the Tullamarine Freeway (M2), with the Essendon Fields exit clearly signposted. Parking is available on-site, including a wheelchair-accessible car park. From the city centre, the drive typically takes 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis and rideshare services such as Uber are also common options.
Public transport options are limited compared to Melbourne Airport. The nearest train station is Essendon station (on the Craigieburn line), about 2 km away. From the station, you can take a taxi or a bus route (e.g., Route 465 or 467) to the airport. Alternatively, some hotels in the area offer shuttle services.
Essendon Fields is close to the suburbs of Essendon, Strathmore, and Moonee Ponds. For passengers staying overnight, there are several hotels within a short drive, including the Mercure Melbourne Essendon and the Nightcap at Moonee Valley.
The terminal at Essendon Fields Airport is compact but provides essential amenities for passengers. All facilities are confirmed and include:
Please note that there are no dedicated lounges or extensive shopping options; the airport focuses on efficient, point-to-point service for charter and general aviation passengers.
Essendon Fields is situated within the City of Moonee Valley, a diverse area known for its mix of residential suburbs, parks, and cultural attractions. The region is historically significant as the site of the first Melbourne International Airport and the birthplace of Qantas's early international flights. Today, the surrounding area is a hub for aviation-related businesses, warehousing, and light industry.
Passengers flying from Essendon Fields often do so for business charters, corporate travel, or regional connections. The airport's proximity to the Melbourne CBD and the wealthy northern suburbs makes it a popular choice for executives and VIP travellers. Additionally, the area is home to several golf courses (such as the Royal Melbourne Golf Club) and sporting venues (including the Moonee Valley Racecourse), attracting visitors for events.
For leisure travellers, the nearby suburb of Essendon offers charming cafes, boutiques, and the historic Essendon Village precinct. The broader Melbourne region provides world-class dining, arts, and entertainment, all within a short drive.
Before your flight, confirm your operator's check-in procedures, as many charter flights have different requirements than commercial airlines. Security screening is in place for flights over certain sizes, so arrive at least 30 minutes before departure for domestic charters.
