Avianca, legally known as Aerovías Nacionales de Colombia S.A., is the flag carrier of Colombia and one of the oldest airlines in the world, with roots tracing back to 1919. Founded on December 5, 1919, by German Colombian entrepreneur Werner Kaemerer and a group of investors as Sociedad Colombo-Alemana de Transporte Aéreo (SCADTA), the airline began operations with a fleet of Junkers F.13 seaplanes. Through mergers and acquisitions, including the 1940 merger with Servicio Aéreo Colombiano (SACO), the airline formally adopted the name Avianca in 1949. Its ownership has evolved over the decades; currently, Avianca is owned by the Avianca Group, a subsidiary of the integrated aviation company Avianca Holdings S.A., which itself is controlled by the Brazilian corporate group Synergy Aerospace and the airline’s management. Following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization completed in 2021, Avianca emerged as a more lean and efficient carrier, focused on strengthening its network and modernizing its fleet.
The airline’s fleet is composed predominantly of Airbus narrow-body aircraft, including the A319, A320, and A321 families, with the A320neo series representing a significant portion of its modern, fuel-efficient capacity. For longer-haul and international operations, Avianca operates a small but crucial fleet of wide-body Airbus A330-200s and Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, the latter introduced in 2015 to support premium long-range routes. The carrier has been systematically retiring older equipment, such as the Airbus A318 and the Fokker 50, in favor of a streamlined, all-Airbus family for short- to medium-haul flights, while the Boeing 787 remains the backbone of its intercontinental services. This fleet strategy underscores Avianca’s commitment to reducing operating costs, lowering emissions, and providing a consistent passenger experience across its network.
Avianca’s primary hub and operational base is El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. This airport serves as the central connecting point for the airline’s extensive domestic and international schedule. In addition to Bogotá, the airline maintains significant focus city operations at other major Colombian airports, including Medellín’s José María Córdova International Airport, Cali’s Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport, and to a lesser degree, Barranquilla’s Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport and Cartagena’s Rafael Núñez International Airport. These focus cities allow Avianca to offer robust connectivity within Colombia and to key international markets. The airline’s operational model is that of a full-service, network carrier, with a strong emphasis on connecting passengers through its Bogotá hub. It offers multiple cabin classes, a frequent flyer program called LifeMiles, and a range of ancillary services. Notably, Avianca underwent a strategic shift in recent years, becoming more cost-conscious and implementing a “low-cost plus” hybrid model designed to compete with low-cost carriers while retaining certain full-service features such as a premium cabin and a loyalty program.
Avianca has been a proud member of the Star Alliance since June 2012, becoming the first airline based in Colombia and the second in Latin America (after TAM Linhas Aéreas) to join the world’s largest airline alliance. This membership grants its passengers access to an extensive global network of over 1,200 destinations across nearly 200 countries through seamless connectivity with fellow Star Alliance members. Among the airline’s notable milestones is its longevity: it is recognized as the second-oldest continually operating airline in the world, after KLM. Avianca has also been recognized for its operational safety and has received several industry awards, including Best Airline in South America by Skytrax in 2018 and 2019. The airline continues to evolve, focusing on digital innovation, fleet renewal, and network optimization to maintain its leading position in the Latin American aviation market while honoring its storied legacy as a pioneer of Colombian aviation.
