SmartLynx Airlines, designated by the IATA code 6Y, is a Latvian ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) and charter carrier headquartered in Mārupe, near Riga. Founded in 1992, the airline began as a small air taxi and charter operator, initially flying Soviet-era types such as the Antonov An-26 and Tupolev Tu-134. Over the subsequent decades, it underwent a comprehensive transformation, phasing out older models and adopting a modern fleet strategy. Today, SmartLynx is wholly owned by Avia Solutions Group, a global aviation services holding company headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. This corporate structure gives the carrier strong backing for fleet renewal and international expansion, while retaining its Baltic roots and operational autonomy.
The fleet has been exclusively Airbus since the completion of a major transition around 2019, when the last Boeing 737 Classic aircraft were retired. SmartLynx currently operates a mixed fleet of Airbus A320ceo and A321ceo narrowbodies for passenger charter and ACMI contracts, as well as Airbus A330-300 widebodies for longer-haul seasonal and ad-hoc operations. In parallel, the airline has developed a dedicated cargo division, converting several A321 and A330 passenger aircraft into freighter configurations—namely the A321P2F and A330-300P2F. These freighters serve express logistics and general cargo clients, complementing the passenger side. The fleet is characterised by relatively young airframes, contributing to high operational reliability and fuel efficiency, which are key selling points in the competitive ACMI market.
The airline’s primary hub and home base is Riga International Airport (RIX) in Latvia, where its main maintenance hangars and headquarters are located. Supporting bases are maintained at Tallinn Airport in Estonia and Vilnius Airport in Lithuania, reflecting the carrier’s strong Baltic identity. These bases allow SmartLynx to position aircraft rapidly across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Asia to fulfil seasonal capacity demands. Unlike network carriers, the airline does not operate scheduled passenger services under its own brand; instead, its aircraft fly under the livery of partner tour operators or scheduled airlines during peak periods, or as part of dedicated charter programmes.
SmartLynx follows a pure charter and ACMI operational model, without any membership in global airline alliances. It functions primarily as a capacity provider, offering wet-lease, full-charter, and ad-hoc services to airlines, tour operators, and cargo forwarders. Notable milestones include the completion of an all-Airbus fleet by 2019, the launch of the cargo division in the same year, and consistent recognition for operational safety and reliability from industry auditors such as IATA’s Operational Safety Audit (IOSA). The airline has also invested heavily in in-house maintenance capabilities, further strengthening its self-sufficiency. With a strategy focused on flexibility, modern equipment, and rapid deployment, SmartLynx continues to grow as one of Europe’s leading ACMI and charter specialists.
