Overview

Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) serves as the primary gateway to the coastal province of Khanh Hoa in southern-central Vietnam. While the airport itself is located on the Cam Ranh Bay peninsula, most travelers pass through it heading to the vibrant resort city of Nha Trang, roughly 30 kilometres north. Originally built as a military airbase during the Vietnam War era, the airport underwent a major transformation in the 2000s, with a new passenger terminal opening in 2004 and a larger international terminal added in 2018. Today it handles a mix of domestic flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang, as well as international services from China, South Korea, Russia, and other parts of Southeast Asia. Traffic peaks early in the morning (around 5 am) and again in the late afternoon (around 5 pm), when many charter flights arrive and depart.

Cam Ranh International Airport sits on a narrow strip of land between the South China Sea and Cam Ranh Bay, about 30 km south of Nha Trang city centre. The closest town is Cam Ranh itself, a smaller port settlement. For travellers heading to Nha Trang, the most practical options are taxis, ride-hailing apps (like Grab), or pre-booked private transfers. The journey takes roughly 45 minutes on Highway 1A, depending on traffic. Public buses also run between the airport and Nha Trang’s central bus station, with fares being significantly cheaper. From the airport, you can also reach other coastal destinations such as Doc Let Beach (north of Nha Trang) or the resorts along the Cam Ranh peninsula, many of which are a short drive away. Renting a car with a driver is easy, though self-drive car rentals are less common. The airport has both free and paid parking lots, the free one being a bit further from the terminal.

Khanh Hoa province is one of Vietnam’s top coastal destinations, drawing visitors for its long sandy beaches, clear warm waters, and offshore islands. Nha Trang, the provincial capital, is famous for its beachfront promenade, scuba diving and snorkelling spots like Hon Mun Island, and the ancient Cham towers of Po Nagar. The region is also known for its seafood – particularly lobster – and for the production of fish sauce (nước mắm), which is a staple in Vietnamese cooking. South of Nha Trang, the Cam Ranh peninsula is home to luxury resorts and golf courses, while further north you’ll find quieter beaches like Doc Let. The climate is tropical, with a dry season from January to August and a rainy season from September to December.
