Longana Airport (IATA: LOD) is a small domestic airstrip serving Ambae Island, one of the northern islands of Vanuatu in the South Pacific. It is the primary point of entry for travellers heading to this remote and volcanic island, handling scheduled flights from Port Vila and Santo. The airport is basic but functional, catering to both local residents and adventurous visitors. Given the island’s rugged terrain and limited road network, air travel is the most practical way to reach Ambae. Location & Access

Longana Airport is situated on the east coast of Ambae Island, near the village of Longana. The island itself is part of the Penama Province and lies roughly 250 kilometres north of the capital, Port Vila. Access to the airport is primarily by scheduled flights operated by Air Vanuatu. These flights typically depart from Bauerfield Airport in Port Vila or Santo-Pekoa International Airport on Espiritu Santo. The flight from Port Vila takes about an hour, offering dramatic views of lush volcanic landscapes and scattered coral reefs. Once on the ground, the airport is a short walk or drive from Longana village. There are no formal taxi services, but local drivers can be arranged in advance. The roads on Ambae are mostly unpaved and can be challenging after rain, so four-wheel-drive vehicles are common for transfers to accommodations and other villages.

As a remote airstrip, Longana Airport offers minimal facilities. The confirmed amenity is a toilet, located within a small terminal building. There are no restaurants, cafes, or shops at the airport, so travellers should bring their own food and water for the journey. Seating is limited, and there is no air conditioning in the waiting area. The terminal is basic but clean. There is no baggage carousel; luggage is unloaded from the aircraft onto a cart and passengers collect it directly. There is no ATM or currency exchange on site; visitors should arrange cash before arriving. Longana Airport does not operate daily; flights are scheduled based on demand and weather conditions. Peak hours are typically early morning, around 6:00 am and 8:00 am, when flights from Port Vila and Santo arrive and depart. There is no official website or phone number for the airport itself. For flight bookings and schedules, travellers must contact Air Vanuatu directly or work through a travel agent in Port Vila. Given the limited services, passengers are advised to confirm flight times 24 hours in advance and arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. There is no parking lot, but drivers can drop off and pick up near the terminal. The airport is open only during flight times, so plan accordingly. There are no accommodation options within walking distance of the airport, but several guesthouses and eco-lodges are scattered around the island, reachable by pre-arranged transport. For essential supplies, Longana village has a small store, but it is advisable to bring everything you need from the main islands.
