In the 20 years I served in the Air Force, I have NEVER seen an airport refusing to serve paying passengers and you can imagine, I have seen A LOT of airports. They are usually very helpful trying to get you on the plane. This airport is the smaller than a garage and you need to be there an hour before your flight because they WILL NOT check you in if your within 45 minutes of departure. Im looking at the plane, no one has boarded yet, and we are 40 minutes early and refuse to check my son in for his flight. They turned away 5 passengers that day, including my son who is also serving this country in the Marines. There is NOTHING on the website stating this rule, not that it would have helped because who looks at the airport website. There was no email sent when the ticket was purchased stating you will be refused checkin at this phone booth sized airport within 45 minutes of flight. We are now 2 hours from home and need to wait 6 hours before the next flight. If you think American Airlines was helpful to move our flight to Syracuse, wrong, they wanted to charge us FULL TICKET PRICE as a fee to switch airports. DO NOT USE THIS AIRPORT. The Airport Manager has no idea what he is doing and should resign.
GO TO SYRACUSE!!!! Unless you want to pay $800 for the pleasure of showing up an hour for your flight, waiting over 2 hours to take off, rebooking your connecting flight, and a complimentary beverage. Security and staff at the airport were great. Flight has been delayed due to a "software reboot" from control so still stuck on the ground. Flight was supposed to leave at 0600, it's now 0700. So at 0730, we were forced to deplane and go back into the terminal. No update on the "reboot". Tough to imagine how a control system that handles two flights a day could mess this up so bad. Finally, at 0835, AA Flight took off for Philadelphia.
The Watertown Airport parking lot may be free but it is unlit and not safe to walk in. It is a lawsuit waiting to happen or maybe worse as someone could be injured. On a positive note, my bag was lost, left at a previous airport by American and a staff member named Riley was very professional and helpful. I am waiting for my bag to arrive and he called and let me know it was on the way. He is an excellent employee.
Went to pickup our daughter. Parking lot full of large mud holes and parking for handicap and trying to find an opening in the fence is ridiculous. We would never been able to get a wheelchair thru there. Certainly not friendly for seniors or handicap. No signs telling where waiting area is and only benches to sit on. What a joke. Felt like I was sitting in a construction zone.
Watertown International Airport (IATA: ART) serves as a small but important regional air hub for New York’s North Country. Located in the town of Dexter, it primarily handles general aviation traffic and scheduled passenger flights, connecting the Watertown–Fort Drum area to larger hubs. The airport is a vital link for both civilian travelers and military personnel stationed at nearby Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division. While modest in size, it offers essential amenities and a no-hassle travel experience compared to larger airports. The single-terminal facility processes passengers quickly, making it a convenient choice for those heading to the Thousand Islands region or the Adirondack foothills.
Watertown International Airport sits about 8 miles south of downtown Watertown and roughly 5 miles west of the village of Dexter. It is easily reached via Interstate 81 (exit 45) and New York State Route 12, which run through the area. The airport’s address is 22799 Commerce Point Drive, Dexter, NY 13634. For drivers, the airport offers a free parking lot right at the terminal, with both standard and accessible spaces. On-site parking is ample and requires no fee—a definite plus for travellers. Rideshares and taxis are available on request, but public transit options are limited; most visitors arrive by personal vehicle or rental car. Syracuse Hancock International Airport lies about 70 miles south, while Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport is approximately 100 miles north, making Watertown a practical alternative for those in the immediate region.
Despite its compact footprint, Watertown International Airport provides several traveller-friendly amenities. The terminal is fully wheelchair-accessible, with designated parking, entrance ramps, and an accessible toilet. Clean restrooms are available, including a changing table for families. Free Wi-Fi is offered throughout the terminal, allowing passengers to stay connected while waiting. There is no on-site restaurant or café, but vending machines and a small seating area are present. The airport’s car park is both free and well-lit, with spaces for short- and long-term stays. Because the airport is small, navigating from curb to gate takes only minutes. Peak travel times tend to fall around 2 pm and 3 pm, when afternoon flights depart; arriving early is still advisable, but security lines are typically short.
Watertown International Airport is the aerial gateway to the Thousand Islands region, a celebrated destination on the St. Lawrence River known for its scenic beauty, boating, fishing, and historic castles like Boldt Castle. The area also lies within the Tug Hill Plateau and the western edge of the Adirondack Park, offering year-round outdoor recreation—from snowmobiling and skiing in winter to hiking and kayaking in summer. Fort Drum, a major U.S. Army installation just north of Watertown, generates significant passenger traffic, as military personnel and their families often fly in and out of ART. The city of Watertown itself provides shopping, dining, and cultural attractions such as the Jefferson County Historical Society. The airport’s proximity to Canada (the Thousand Islands Bridge is about 30 minutes away) also makes it a convenient entry point for cross-border visitors. The region’s economy is driven by tourism, agriculture, and the military presence, and the airport plays a supporting role in keeping these connections strong.
Watertown International Airport does not operate 24 hours a day; its terminal and security checkpoint open in alignment with scheduled flights. Passengers should verify current hours by calling +1 315-786-6000 or visiting the official website: www.watertownairport.com. The TSA checkpoint is staffed during flight times, and standard carry-on rules apply. There are no currency exchange or duty-free shops. For those needing a bite to eat, options near the airport include a handful of fast-food and casual restaurants along Route 12 and in Dexter. The airport’s small scale means that rental car counters are available inside the terminal, but it is wise to reserve ahead of busy periods. Overall, Watertown International offers a straightforward, efficient travel experience for those exploring the North Country or connecting through Fort Drum.
