It's a nice small airport. It's easy to get in and out of the parking lots. The lines through security are not very long. I was dropping off a 96-year-old lady to fly to Florida today. It made this task very easy to do. She's at the gate waiting for the plane.
The security is horrible, going through a bag for a sealed nonliquid item, that's clearly brand new and not harmless, store bought because your machine alarmed. Machines are not human . And malfunction, their computers. Then I asked them to throw the item away and they said they can't they have to finish their procedure. They opened the package that was sealed manufacture to run a test, brainless. The item was clearly marked and the price was still on the item. The last time it was pool dive toys. Like you can see their clearly toys.
I remember when I for the first time landed at Toledo Airport in 2016. The Airport was so peaceful with less crowd and good and helpful security staff. It is not that much big Airport but is enough for the city like Toledo. Taxis and rental cars are also available if you like to travel through this Airport
For whatever reason Toledo Airport forgot that they scheduled an airshow on the date of our return. This delayed our flight an hour and half. How could they not know they scheduled an air show! That being said the air port staff and workers were amazing they were very nice and helpful.
Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport sits 14 miles southwest of downtown Toledo in the village of Swanton, Ohio, serving as the primary commercial airport for northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. With a single passenger terminal and a handful of daily flights operated primarily by Allegiant Air, it handles around 400,000 passengers annually — a fraction of Detroit Metro's traffic but enough to justify direct service to destinations like Orlando, St. Pete–Clearwater, Punta Gorda, and Phoenix. The airport's name honors Eugene F. Kranz, the NASA flight director famously associated with the Apollo 13 mission, who grew up in Toledo. The terminal itself reflects the region's no-fuss character: compact, efficient, and easy to navigate, with all services on one level.
The airport is located at 11013 Airport Highway, Swanton, OH 43558. From downtown Toledo, take I-75 south to exit 193 (US-20A/Swanton), then turn west onto Airport Highway. The drive is roughly 20–25 minutes in light traffic. From Michigan, take US-23 south to I-475, then exit 17 to US-20A west. Public transit is limited: TARTA (Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority) runs the 28 Airport Express route, but service is infrequent and designed around flight schedules. Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft operate reliably, and taxis are available at the taxi stand outside baggage claim. On-site parking is straightforward: a single paid lot adjacent to the terminal. Parking fees are $10 per day, with a short-term lot for pickups and drop-offs. There is no long-term economy lot, so plan accordingly if leaving a car for several days. Bicycle access is possible but not common — the road lacks dedicated bike lanes.
The terminal at Toledo Express is a single-story building with two concourses that merge into one larger waiting area. On arrival, passengers enter the baggage claim hall, which has two carousels and a collection of rental car counters (Enterprise, Avis, Budget, and Hertz). Check-in for Allegiant Air takes place near the entrance, with self-service kiosks and staffed counters. Security is managed by TSA; PreCheck is available, and the checkpoints rarely have long waits — 10–15 minutes is typical. The waiting area beyond security has seating with power outlets, free Wi-Fi (network: "ToledoExpress-Free"), and large windows overlooking the ramp. Food options are limited: a café called "Runway Cafe" serves coffee, sandwiches, and snacks during operating hours. There are vending machines as well. Restrooms are clean and include wheelchair-accessible stalls and changing tables. The airport confirmed facility list includes wheelchair-accessible entrance, parking, and toilet, baggage storage (ask at the information desk near baggage claim), and Wi-Fi. There are no airline lounges or business centers. The atmosphere is quiet and low-stress — a contrast to larger hubs. Travel tip: arrive 90 minutes before departure if checking a bag, 60 minutes for carry-on only.
Swanton itself is a village of about 3,800 residents, set amidst the agricultural flatlands of northwestern Ohio. Corn and soybean fields stretch in all directions, and the Maumee River meanders 10 miles to the south. The airport’s presence brings a few hotels and the occasional traveler, but Swanton’s character remains small-town American — a Main Street with a diner, a public library, and a grain elevator on the edge of town. For most visitors, the airport is a stepping stone to the larger Toledo area or the Lake Erie islands. Downtown Toledo, 20 minutes away, offers the Toledo Museum of Art (free admission, with a renowned glass collection and a building designed by Frank Gehry), the Toledo Zoo (one of the top-rated in the country), and Fifth Third Field home of the Toledo Mud Hens minor league baseball team. For nature, Oak Openings Preserve Metropark — a 5,000-acre mosaic of oak savanna, wet prairie, and dunes — is a 10-minute drive from the airport and excellent for hiking, biking, and birdwatching. Maumee Bay State Park on Lake Erie is 30 minutes north, with a beach, marina, and trails. History buffs can visit the Wolcott House Museum in Maumee or Fort Meigs in Perrysburg, a reconstructed War of 1812 fort. What makes this airport noteworthy beyond its size is its namesake: Eugene F. Kranz, the NASA flight director who led the Apollo 13 rescue. Born in Toledo in 1933, Kranz embodies the region’s engineering grit. The airport’s terminal displays a small exhibit on his career, including a photo of the iconic white vest he wore during missions. It’s a subtle nod to a legacy of problem-solving under pressure — a fitting spirit for any travel hub.
The airport's official website is http://toledoexpress.com/. Phone: +1 419-865-2351. The terminal is not open 24 hours; hours vary by flight schedule, generally opening three hours before the first departure and closing after the last arrival (check the website for exact times). Parking remains the same rate year-round — $10 per day, payable at pay stations near the exits (credit card or cash accepted). Baggage storage is available at the information desk, but check availability ahead as it may be limited. TSA regulations are standard: liquids under 3.4 ounces, remove electronics larger than a phone from carry-on. One concrete piece of advice: if you're driving in, fill up your gas tank before returning the rental car — the airport has no gas station nearby, and the closest one is 2 miles east on Airport Highway.
