Busiest on Mondays around 10 am — usually as busy as it gets.
This is beyond disgusting. I was in the pattern and nobody mentioned landing fees until my tire touched the runway. They said welcome to montauk that will be $40. They looked at me like I had 5 heads when I said I wasn't aware of these fees. Nothing is on ForeFlight or the chart supplement. Who the hell goes on their website? Predatory pieces of garbage. Go to block island instead these jerks don't deserve your money.
great approach, not so great rules around touch and gos when there is literally zero traffic.. the fee information is only published on their website and not the chart supplement or foreflight.
Updated 2023, and my how things have changed... For years a solid 5-star review, now down to one star. My last visit was my very last visit. It was made plain my presence was an inconvenience. I don't mind the $45 landing fee which I consider excessive and punitive, but to be made to feel unwelcome at that price is disingenuous and a complete turn around on what used to be one of the jewels of general aviation. For years Montauk w/ Helen at the helm was a welcoming place. Pricey landing fees but well worth while because it was special. This Long Island tradition has changed, and not by accident. Now we are being made to feel like cannon fodder. The place is still clean, and there's a terrific beach, but the new ownership has made this a DON'T GO destination. Block Island is another few minutes to the East with great walking trails, restaurants, and without the MSDS attitude. I'm not in the habit of offering poor reviews but this turn-about is so abrupt, and so offensive that one's duty to a fellow aviator outweighs all else.
Landing fee is $25. Additional $20 for an overnight. Privately owned. Really nice, scenic airport. Landing on runway 24 you land over a beach and sand dune. Runway 24 is right traffic. No touch and gos when the airport is busy (especially during the weekends during the summer).
Montauk Airport (KMTP) sits at the eastern tip of Long Island, New York, on the Atlantic coast. It is a privately owned general aviation airport with a single 5,024-foot asphalt runway, Runway 24/6. The airport offers one of the most scenic approaches in the Northeast—landing on Runway 24 takes you over a beach and sand dunes. However, the airport has gained a reputation among pilots for its high landing fees and inconsistent communication about charges, which are only published on the airport's website, not on standard aviation databases like ForeFlight or the Chart Supplement.
Montauk Airport is located at 477 Montauk Highway, Montauk, NY 11954. From New York City, the drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours via the Long Island Expressway (I-495) east to the end of Route 27. Public transport options include the Long Island Rail Road to Montauk station, about 3 miles west of the airport, where taxis and rideshares are available. The Hampton Jitney bus also stops in Montauk, with a short taxi ride to the airport. By car, parking on the field incurs fees (see Practical Information). Cyclists will find Montauk bike-friendly, but the airport lacks dedicated bike racks.
The terminal is a single-storey building with modest facilities. Confirmed amenities include wheelchair-accessible entrances, parking, and toilets. There is a small pilot lounge, vending machines, but no full-service restaurant. Staff handle check-in, fuel requests, and collect landing fees. The atmosphere is functional and efficient, though some pilots have reported feeling unwelcome during busy periods, especially summer weekends. The terminal is clean but basic. An outdoor seating area overlooks the runway. Arriving passengers should be prepared to pay fees immediately; credit cards are accepted. The airport’s proximity to the beach—just steps from the tarmac—makes it popular for day-trippers arriving by small aircraft.
Montauk is a village at the easternmost point of Long Island's South Fork, known for its beaches, fishing, and as part of the upscale Hamptons. The area's geography is shaped by glacial moraines, creating rolling hills and dramatic coastline. Montauk Point State Park features the historic Montauk Point Lighthouse, built in 1796—the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States. Downtown Montauk offers seafood restaurants, surf shops, and Montauk Harbor, a hub for charter fishing boats. The village also hosts the Montauk Music Festival and provides access to Shadmoor State Park and Camp Hero State Park. For pilots, Montauk Airport is the only general aviation airport on the East End; alternatives include East Hampton Airport (KHTO) or Francis S. Gabreski (KFOK) farther west. Business travelers and vacationers use KMTP for its ocean proximity. The airport’s direct beach access—you can walk from the tarmac to the sand in minutes—is a rare convenience. However, summer weekends see heavy traffic, and the airport restricts touch-and-go operations when busy. The landing and parking fees, which have increased in recent years, are a common complaint. Block Island Airport (KBID) in Rhode Island is sometimes suggested as a lower-cost alternative with less hassle. Despite these issues, the scenic approach and immediate access to Montauk’s attractions keep the airport busy.
Montauk Airport is open daily from 8:00 AM to sunset (generally 5:00 PM in winter, later in summer). Phone: +1 631-668-3738. Website: montaukairport.com. Current fees: $25 landing fee, additional $20 for overnight parking (total $45). Fuel (100LL) available; call ahead for Jet-A. No control tower; use CTAF 122.7. Runway 24 has right traffic. Touch-and-goes are not permitted when the pattern is busy, especially summer weekends. Tip: Check the airport’s website for fee updates before departure—do not rely on ForeFlight or the Chart Supplement, as they may not list the landing fee. For a smooth visit, arrive with exact change or a card, and call ahead to confirm fees and availability. If staying overnight, consider Block Island Airport as a lower-cost alternative.
