Wrong place! I also went here to drop off a friend. It's not a passenger airport!! We are 20 min away from the airport MOB. I should have don't my research. It's frustrating. It should say. Mobile "commercial" or Not pssenger transport or something to let us know it's not where passengers go! I'm very frustrated!! Even when we looked up the address, it said Michigan ave. It never crossed my mind it was not the correct place. The reviews told me. Pls fix this problem for everyone else.
Mobile is plugging this airport, which will not host passengers until 2026, and letting Mobile Regional hesd into disrepair. Save your time and money and don't fly out of Alabama anywhere. Head to Pensacola (<1 hr away) or NOLA (2.5 hours away).
Hi Kenadee, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. While we're excited about the new terminal at Mobile International opening in 2026, we haven't forgotten about Mobile Regional. It's still an active part of our community, and we're continuing to support it and the people who rely on it. If you're curious about what's ahead, you can see the progress and plans for the new terminal at BuildBFM.com. Wishing you smooth travels!
Regional is going to be developed for commercial use. Airframe assembly, modification, air freight...it won't be abandoned.
I swear! I saw a spirit airlines plane in the google maps photo! Its for passenger now! I even saw passenger planes JetBlue, Frontier Airlines, and Delta Airlines! In the google maps photo
Mobile International Airport (IATA: BFM, ICAO: KBFM) serves the Gulf Coast region of Alabama, primarily the city of Mobile and its surrounding communities. Despite its name, it is the secondary commercial airport in the area, complementing the larger Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) for general aviation and some commercial services. The airport is situated on the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, a former U.S. Air Force base that has been redeveloped into a mixed-use industrial and aviation complex. BFM handles a mix of corporate jet traffic, cargo flights, and limited scheduled passenger service, with airlines such as Frontier offering seasonal routes. It is a convenient alternative for travellers seeking access to downtown Mobile and the eastern shore of Mobile Bay.
Mobile International Airport is located at 1891 9th Street in Mobile, Alabama, approximately 3 miles (5 km) south of downtown Mobile. The airport sits on the west bank of Mobile River, directly across from the city's historic port area. It is accessible via the Bankhead Tunnel or the Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge from downtown. For those coming from the east (e.g., Daphne, Fairhope), the short drive via the Battleship Parkway (US-90) and the George C. Wallace Tunnel provides a scenic route under the river.
By car: The airport is easily reached from Interstate 10 by taking the Michigan Avenue exit (Exit 1) heading south, then following signs to the Mobile Aeroplex. Free parking is available in the airport's lot, which is wheelchair accessible. There is no direct public transit link, but ride-sharing services (Uber, Lyft) and taxis are readily available from downtown. The nearest major highway is US-90, which runs along the waterfront.
Nearby cities: The airport is about 30 minutes from Gulf Shores (55 miles south) and 1 hour from Pensacola, Florida (60 miles east). New Orleans is roughly 2.5 hours west via I-10.
Mobile International Airport offers essential amenities focused on accessibility and convenience:
Mobile is the oldest city in Alabama, founded by French colonists in 1702. Its deep-water port is one of the busiest on the Gulf Coast, handling a significant share of the region's imports and exports. The airport sits within the Mobile Aeroplex, a former military base that now houses aerospace manufacturing (including Airbus's assembly line) and the U.S. Coast Guard's Aviation Training Center.
Travelers to the area often come for business (shipbuilding, logistics, aerospace) or leisure. Mobile's historic districts offer antebellum architecture, the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, and the Mobile Carnival Museum (celebrating the city's Mardi Gras, which predates New Orleans'). The Gulf Coast beaches—Gulf Shores and Orange Beach—are a short drive south, known for white sand and seafood. The region's geography features the Mobile Bay estuary and vast pine forests. Wildlife enthusiasts visit the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.
