TSA and CHAD were amazing. Our flight was delayed 2 hrs and everyone except Jackie was so nice even when there was nothing they could do. Jackie was a flat out witch about it. Thank you to TSA and Chad!!
This airport is really annoying the lady who works here is not flexible at all. It's the tiniest of airports and there could literally be 3 passengers boarding and if you get there 30-35minutes before the flight before she refuses to turn on the machine and check in your (pre checked pre paid) bag. There is no one there no other passengers and she would rather walk all the back to the entrance and rebook your flight then check in your bag in 2 seconds. I've had multiple inconveniences here and it's really annoying considering the size. I have made flights in other larger airports only showing up 30-45 minutes before takeoff and I still have no issues at all.
Disappointing Experience: We arrived at the airport at 11:18 AM for our 11:40 AM flight, only to find that we couldn't check in as a group online. When we arrived at the gate, we heard the "last call" announcement, but there was no one at the front desk to assist us. The TSA tried to get us help from the United Airlines front desk staff, but they refused to provide assistance immediately. As a result, we missed our flight and had to book a later one. Very frustrating experience due to lack of staff support and poor customer service. Would not recommend this airport for timely travel.
Everyone was extremely nice including TSA. Made me very appreciative of small airports. Liberal is lucky to have these amazing people!
Liberal Airport (LBL) is a public-use airport located in Liberal, Kansas, serving the southwestern region of the state. It primarily accommodates general aviation, including private aircraft, charter flights, and occasional scheduled commuter services. The airport plays a key role in connecting the area to broader air transport networks, supporting local business travel, agricultural operations, and medical evacuations. While it does not have the scale of a major commercial hub, it provides essential air access for residents and visitors alike. The airport is owned and operated by the City of Liberal, reflecting its importance to the community.
Liberal Airport is situated approximately 3 miles south of downtown Liberal, at 1000 Terminal Drive. The airport lies in the High Plains region of southwest Kansas, an area characterised by flat, open terrain and a semi-arid climate. Access to the airport is straightforward via US-83, which runs north-south through the town. From the city centre, drivers can reach the terminal in under 10 minutes. On-site parking is available, including a designated wheelchair-accessible car park for passengers with mobility needs. For those without a personal vehicle, local taxi services may be an option—though public transit is limited, so arranging a ride ahead of time is advisable. The airport also serves as a base for general aviation aircraft, with ramp space for parking.
Although Liberal Airport is a small facility, it includes essential amenities for passenger comfort. The terminal is equipped with a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a wheelchair-accessible toilet, ensuring that travellers with reduced mobility can navigate the building with relative ease. Restrooms are available for all passengers, kept clean and functional. There are no confirmed food or beverage concessions within the terminal, so passengers are encouraged to bring snacks or drinks for their journey. Similarly, there are no shops or duty-free outlets. The airport does not offer Wi-Fi or business lounges; however, the staff at the general aviation desk can assist with basic needs. The facility’s simplicity means that travellers should plan accordingly, but the airport’s efficiency allows for quick check-ins and departures.
Liberal is the county seat of Seward County and is known as the “Land of Oz” because of its annual Oztoberfest celebration and the Liberal Land of Oz Museum, which pays homage to L. Frank Baum’s classic story. The city was founded in 1888 and derived its name from the liberal-minded hospitality of its early settlers. The region’s economy is driven by agriculture—particularly wheat, corn, and cattle—as well as the oil and gas industry. The Cimarron National Grassland, located about 30 miles to the south, offers outdoor recreation opportunities such as hiking, birding, and camping. Travelers passing through Liberal Airport often include those visiting the Oz attractions, conducting business in the energy sector, or using the airport as a stopover en route to other destinations in the central United States. The airport thus serves as a gateway to a unique cultural and economic landscape.
Liberal Airport is not open 24 hours a day, and its terminal hours may be limited—specifically, it appears that the building may not be open all days of the week. The busiest times for arrivals and departures are typically around 6 pm and 7 pm, so passengers should confirm flight schedules and facility access with their airline or the airport staff. For inquiries, the airport can be reached by phone at +1 620-626-2207. The official website (https://www.cityofliberal.org/202/Liberal-Airport) provides additional details on airport operations, airport board meetings, and contact information for the airport manager. As with any small airport, it is wise to call ahead to verify hours and services before travelling, especially if arriving outside of typical business hours. The airport’s website also offers links to local resources, including hotels and transportation options, to help plan a smooth journey.
