Nice, small airport. Arrival was smooth and quick. Surprisingly, there is no public transport to the city centre (at least not on Sundays). The taxi fare (500-1000 SEK) was almost as expensive as a plane ticket from Stockholm. Tip for budget travellers: about 3.5 km away (walking on the asphalt road with not much traffic) is the bus stop Sorberge norra (https://maps.app.goo.gl/NNYE2axzxthxKNTm8 ), where you can catch a bus to the city for about one-tenth of the taxi price (August 2025 53 SEK).
I once got let down by a taxi company and there was no other way home so one of the airport staff offered to take me! Thank you!
Please note: AIRPORT open only 1 hour before early flight
Excellent customer service. My flight to Arlanda was canceled, and the staff was very helpful. Christina was friendly, professional, and very efficient. She arranged an airport taxi so I could get to Arlanda on time, and catch my flight to Los Angeles.
Sundsvall-Timra Airport (SDL) is a regional airport serving the mid-eastern coast of Sweden, primarily the city of Sundsvall and the surrounding province of Medelpad. It is a gateway for both business and leisure travellers, connecting this part of Sweden to domestic destinations and a handful of seasonal international routes. The airport handles scheduled flights from airlines such as SAS and BRA, with regular services to Stockholm Arlanda and Stockholm Bromma. During winter, charter flights to sunnier Mediterranean destinations are common, as locals seek warmer climates. The airport also accommodates general aviation and occasional cargo flights, but its main role is to provide efficient access for passengers heading to the region's commercial and industrial hubs, as well as its vast outdoor recreational areas.
Sundsvall-Timra Airport is situated approximately 21 kilometres north of Sundsvall city centre, in the locality of Sorberge, within Timrå Municipality. The airport lies close to the E4 highway, which runs along the coast of Sweden, making it easily reachable by car. For those driving from Sundsvall, the journey takes about 20 minutes via road 568 or the E4. From Timrå town centre, it is only about 5 kilometres west.
Public transport options include a dedicated airport bus service that connects with Sundsvall Central Station and the city centre. The bus journey takes around 30 minutes. Taxis are readily available outside the terminal, and ridesharing services also operate in the area. For passengers arriving by car, there is both short-term and long-term parking within walking distance of the terminal. The airport is not served by rail, but the bus link provides a direct connection to the national rail network at Sundsvall Central.
Sundsvall-Timra Airport is compact but well-equipped for the number of passengers it serves. The terminal is single-storey with straightforward navigation. Confirmed amenities include:
The airport also features a small café offering sandwiches, pastries, hot and cold drinks, and light meals. A duty-free shop operates for passengers travelling outside the European Union. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal. The airport does not have a lounge, but the café seating area provides a comfortable waiting space. Car rental desks from major companies are located in the arrivals hall.
Sundsvall is known as the capital of Medelpad and is often called "Stone City" because of its downtown area built from stone after a devastating fire in the late 19th century. The city is an important industrial centre, particularly for forestry, pulp, and paper production. The region's landscape is dominated by vast pine and spruce forests, countless lakes, and a rugged coastline along the Gulf of Bothnia.
Outdoor activities are a major draw: hiking, fishing, and skiing in the winter months. Nearby destinations include the Västernorrland County Museum, the Sundsvall Museum, and the scenic island of Alnön, accessible via a bridge from the city. The High Coast (Höga Kusten) UNESCO World Heritage site is about an hour's drive north, offering dramatic cliffs and hiking trails. In winter, skiing resorts such as Vemdalen and Åre are within reach for day trips. The region is also known for its local cuisine, including fresh fish and game.
The airport is not open 24/7; it has specific operating hours. Peak hours for passenger traffic tend to be around 2 pm and 3 pm, corresponding to the main departure and arrival waves for flights to Stockholm. It is advisable to check the exact opening hours on the airport's official website, as they can vary by season and day.
Passengers should arrive at least one hour before a domestic flight and two hours before an international flight. Parking fees can be paid at kiosks or via app. For flight status and additional information, the website provides live updates and a list of airlines.
