Nice and kind staff. It's pleasant to see the runway from the waiting room. As I remember it has a pleasant and respectful atmosphere.. I don't remember any abusive electronic ad screens. I hope it kept that way Update: There is a ~2sqm television screen in the waiting room now. Therefore no more pure, serene and picturesque observation of the tarmac. It seems people can't be deprived of screen movement even for 20 minutes and enjoy the non-media world around, without getting unbearably bored, even at such a special and meaningful moment as the waiting of a flight at an otherwise cozy and charming tiny mountain airport, so there is now a screen to make sure no one has a media deprivation attack.. one can now stare at the screen with that techno-puppet countenance Actually no one sits near or even glance at the thing, only when happen to sit there by chance, so it simply bothers and spoils the charm, as usual. Monopolizing the attention Tip: the 'cinema' is not visible from the children's corner, where the toys are. And it has a view of Hemavan. And a beautiful calculator that actually works, and little cars. No runway contemplation, though Obs. We all have smartphones now so.. what is the point? Update. The toys vanished
Welcoming, clean and friendly airfield. And probably the smallest one I've ever seen
Thanx =)
Airport very small, good restaurant Fica, and very bad flight with Amapola airflight as weather conditions were very bad
Tiny, but Very organised. Plan ahead, and leave plenty of time to find your gate...
Glad you enjoyed your visit. Your are more than welcome back to our beautiful mountains some day :-)
Hemavan Tärnaby Airport (HMV) is a small regional airport nestled in the heart of Swedish Lapland. It serves as the primary air gateway for the twin ski resorts of Hemavan and Tärnaby, as well as the surrounding wilderness areas. Unlike major international hubs, this airport focuses on seasonal traffic, particularly during the winter months when skiers and snowboarders flock to the region's renowned slopes. The airport also sees use during the summer by hikers and nature enthusiasts exploring the nearby Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve, one of Europe's largest protected areas. With a single runway and a modest terminal, Hemavan Tärnaby Airport offers a streamlined, no-fuss travel experience that prioritizes access to the great outdoors.
Hemavan Tärnaby Airport is located approximately 7 kilometers south of Hemavan village and about 15 kilometers south of Tärnaby. It sits in the Vindel River Valley, surrounded by the majestic Scandinavian Mountains. The airport is well-connected by road via Route 363, which runs north-south through the region. For those driving, the airport is about a 2-hour drive from Storuman to the east and about 3 hours from Mo i Rana in Norway to the west. The nearest major city is Umeå, roughly 300 kilometers away, though the drive takes around 4 hours due to winding mountain roads. There is no direct public transport from the airport, but taxis and rental cars are available. Many visitors prefer to drive themselves, as having a car is essential for exploring the area's remote attractions. During the winter, be prepared for snowy conditions – studded tires are recommended, and drivers should check road conditions before setting out.
Hemavan Tärnaby Airport is a small facility designed for efficiency rather than luxury. The terminal is compact, and amenities are minimal but practical. Confirmed facilities include a fully accessible car park with designated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility, a wheelchair-accessible entrance, and an accessible toilet. Standard toilets are also available. There is no restaurant or café within the terminal, so travelers should eat before arriving or bring snacks for their journey. The airport does not have duty-free shops or currency exchange services. For those waiting, a small seating area is provided. Overall, the airport focuses on getting passengers in and out quickly, with no frills but essential accessibility features.
Hemavan and Tärnaby are situated in the Västerbotten region of Swedish Lapland, an area defined by its dramatic alpine scenery and pristine wilderness. The region is best known for its winter sports. Hemavan offers some of the best downhill skiing and snowboarding in Sweden, with a vertical drop of over 600 meters and well-maintained slopes for all levels. Tärnaby, slightly further north, has its own ski area and is famously the hometown of Ingemar Stenmark, one of the greatest alpine skiers of all time. In summer, the landscape transforms into a paradise for hikers, with trails winding through birch forests and up to barren mountain plateaus. The nearby Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve boasts over 500 kilometers of marked trails, including parts of the famous Kungsleden (King's Trail). Wildlife enthusiasts might spot reindeer, moose, and even wolverines. The region also has a strong Sami cultural presence, with opportunities to learn about indigenous reindeer herding traditions. The airport's location makes it a crucial lifeline for this sparsely populated area, connecting residents and visitors to the rest of Sweden and beyond.
Planning ahead is essential when using this small but vital airport. Check flight schedules, road conditions, and arrange ground transport in advance. With the right preparation, Hemavan Tärnaby Airport provides a smooth start to an unforgettable Lapland adventure.
