I was there in 1969 when it was an Army helicopter airfield. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
Super mini airport Located in Hoengseong, but called Wonju Airport There is only one flight to Jeju in the morning and afternoon, and because it is so small, ticketing and search are done super fast Since it uses the runway within the military base, you take a shuttle bus to go inside the base, and after about 5 minutes on the bus, you arrive at the runway The parking lot is large compared to its size, but there are no amenities, and it is the minimum size for just taking a plane.
Although it's a very small military base airport, it's fully equipped with amenities, including a convenience store, a cafe, and even a phone charging station. The staff are all laid-back and friendly. The bus ride from the airport to the airfield offers a unique opportunity to admire the wildflowers and fighter jets. It's small, quiet, clean, and has a cozy feel.
Wonju Airport is the smallest airport in Korea. For a truly unique experience, you can take a bus to the runway. Inside the airport, there are unmanned convenience stores and coffee shops.
Wonju Airport (IATA: WJU, ICAO: RKNW) is a domestic airport serving the city of Wonju and the surrounding province of Gangwon-do in South Korea. It primarily handles scheduled flights to Jeju International Airport, making it a key link for residents and visitors heading to the popular resort island. The airport is also used by seasonal charter flights and occasional military operations due to its location near the Republic of Korea Air Force base. With a single runway and modest passenger terminal, Wonju Airport offers a straightforward, no-fuss experience for travellers looking to bypass the congestion of larger hubs like Incheon or Gimpo. The airport plays an important role in supporting regional tourism, especially for those heading to the mountainous ski resorts, national parks, and traditional cultural sites of Gangwon-do.
Wonju Airport is located in Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon Province, approximately 15 kilometers southeast of downtown Wonju and about 20 kilometers north of the city of Hoengseong. The area is characterized by rolling hills and the outskirts of the Taebaek Mountains, with the airport sitting at an elevation of around 100 meters. There is no direct subway or rail connection to the airport. The most common way to reach it is by car or taxi. From Wonju, a taxi takes about 20–30 minutes, and from Hoengseong, about 25 minutes. Bus services also operate, with intercity buses from Wonju Express Bus Terminal connecting to the airport via local routes – schedules are limited, so checking ahead is advisable. For drivers, the airport is accessible via National Route 5 and local roads. Parking is available onsite with both short-term and long-term lots, including spaces designated for wheelchair users.
Wonju Airport provides essential amenities aimed at passenger comfort and accessibility. The terminal is fully equipped for wheelchair users, with a designated wheelchair-accessible car park, an accessible entrance, and wheelchair-accessible toilets, making it easy for travelers with reduced mobility to navigate the facility. Inside, there are standard toilet facilities, including a changing table for families with infants. Baggage storage is available for passengers who wish to explore the area before or after their flight – useful for those with layovers or waiting for late departures. The terminal also has a small convenience store and a café offering snacks and beverages, though options are limited compared to larger airports. Free Wi-Fi is typically available throughout the terminal, allowing passengers to stay connected while waiting. Note that as a domestic airport, there are no duty-free shops or VIP lounges. The overall environment is quiet and uncongested, making it a pleasant alternative to busier airports.
Gangwon Province is renowned for its dramatic natural landscapes, including the Taebaek Mountains, pristine rivers, and extensive forests. The region is a four-season destination: in winter, it hosts some of South Korea's premier ski resorts, such as Yongpyong and Phoenix Park, both within an hour's drive of Wonju Airport. Spring and autumn bring vibrant foliage and hiking opportunities in places like Chiaksan National Park, located just south of Wonju, and Odaesan National Park further north. Summer offers white-water rafting on the Hantangang River and temple stays in ancient Buddhist monasteries. Wonju itself is a historic city with cultural landmarks like the Gangwon Provincial Museum, the Wonju Hanji Theme Park (dedicated to traditional Korean paper), and the ancient Buddhist temple of Beopjusa. Hoengseong is famous for its cattle farms and the annual Hoengseong Hanu Festival celebrating Korean beef. The airport's catchment area also includes nearby cities such as Jecheon and Chungju, which are known for their lakes and mountains. For travellers seeking a blend of outdoor adventure, cultural heritage, and local cuisine, Wonju Airport is the ideal starting point.
Wonju Airport is not open every day of the week. It operates on a schedule aligned with flight demand, typically open from early morning until evening on days when flights are scheduled. Peak hours are around 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, coinciding with arrivals and departures to and from Jeju. It is advisable to confirm operating days with the airline or check the airport's website. The official website is http://www.airport.co.kr/wonju/main.do, which provides flight schedules, parking information, and service updates. For inquiries by phone, call +82 1661-2626. Currency exchange services are not available at the airport, so visitors should arrange Korean won before arriving. ATMs may be present but are limited; it's safer to bring cash. As a small regional airport, check-in and security processes are generally quick, but passengers should still arrive at least 60 minutes before domestic departure. Baggage storage is available for a fee, and the facility can hold luggage for several hours to a few days. For those waiting, the terminal has basic seating areas and vending machines. Overall, Wonju Airport offers a functional and accessible gateway to the natural and cultural attractions of Gangwon-do.
