Overview

Girua Airport (IATA: GUR, ICAO: AYGR) is a domestic airport serving Popondetta, the capital of Oro Province in Papua New Guinea. It is a vital transport link for the province, connecting remote communities and enabling travel for business, government, and tourism. The airport handles small turboprop aircraft, primarily operated by Airlines PNG and other regional carriers. Girua Airport is situated about 12 kilometres north of Popondetta town centre, near the small settlement of Girua. The airport lies on the coastal plain of Oro Province, surrounded by lush tropical rainforest and oil palm plantations. The location is close to the coast, with the Solomon Sea about 10 kilometres to the east.

Access to and from the airport is by road. The main highway connecting Popondetta to the coast passes near the airport, making the drive relatively straightforward. Most visitors take a taxi or a public minibus (known locally as PMV) from Popondetta. The journey takes roughly 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Taxi fares are negotiable, and it's wise to agree on a price before departure. The road is well-maintained in dry conditions but can become muddy and slippery during the rainy season, which typically runs from December to March.

For trekkers finishing the Kokoda Track, several tour operators provide transfers to and from the airport. The Owers' Corner end of the track is about a two-hour drive south via the Kokoda Highway, which connects to Popondetta. Given the limited flight schedules, it's essential to coordinate transport in advance, as flights may arrive or depart at irregular times.

Parking at the airport is limited. A small car park is available near the terminal, and it is wheelchair-accessible. There is no formal parking fee, but drivers should be prepared for dust or mud depending on the weather.

About the Region

Oro Province is a region of striking contrasts, from steamy lowland jungles to the high peaks of the Owen Stanley Range. The area is best known for the Kokoda Track, a 96-kilometre trail that was the site of a critical campaign during World War II. Today it is a pilgrimage for Australians and history enthusiasts, and a challenging trek through remote villages and pristine rainforest. Girua Airport serves as the northern terminus for trekkers who fly in to walk the track south to Owers' Corner.

Another notable landmark is Mount Lamington, an active volcano that rises 1,680 metres above the coastal plain. Its catastrophic eruption in 1951 devastated the area, and the volcano remains a striking backdrop to Popondetta. Adventurous travellers can arrange guided treks to the summit, though it is a demanding climb through dense vegetation.

The region also offers beautiful beaches such as Buna and Gona, historically significant for their role in the WWII campaign. These beaches have excellent snorkelling and are fringed by coconut palms. For birdwatchers, Oro Province is home to the spectacular Raggiana bird-of-paradise and other endemic species.

Economically, the province relies on oil palm plantations and cocoa farming. The population is predominantly rural, with many communities speaking distinct languages and maintaining traditional customs. Visitors should be respectful of local culture and dress modestly when visiting villages.
