Pathein Airport (BSX) sits about six kilometres west of Pathein city centre, serving as the main air link for Myanmar's Ayeyarwady Region. The airport handles a handful of daily flights, mostly to and from Yangon, operated by Myanmar National Airlines and Air KBZ. It is a small, single-terminal airport with a reputation for cleanliness and surprising beauty — the terminal building is well-maintained, with traditional design elements that hint at the region's craftsmanship. One thing passengers notice quickly: the air conditioning runs at full strength, making the interior noticeably cold even on hot delta days.

Getting There

Reaching Pathein Airport from the city centre is straightforward. The distance is roughly six kilometres, and the journey takes about 15 to 20 minutes by car or taxi. Metered taxis are available in Pathein, but it is easier to negotiate a fixed fare before departing — expect around 5,000 to 8,000 kyats depending on your starting point. Motorcycle taxis (known locally as "moto") are cheaper and faster, though less comfortable with luggage. Most hotels in Pathein can arrange a taxi for you, often including a waiting time fee if you ask them to stay until you check in.

If you are driving yourself, the airport is signposted from the city's main roads. The route passes through suburban areas and rice paddies, giving a glimpse of daily life in the delta. Parking at the airport is free and there is a wheelchair-accessible car park. There is no direct public transport, so a taxi or private car is the only practical option. Flights are infrequent, so arriving at least one hour before departure is sufficient — the terminal is small and security moves quickly.

For those coming from Yangon, the road journey takes about five hours by bus or car, so flying is a significant time saver. However, flights are subject to weather delays, especially during the monsoon season (June to October).

Inside the Terminal

Pathein Airport has a single terminal building that is clean, compact, and easy to navigate. On arrival, passengers walk from the aircraft to the terminal across the tarmac. The baggage claim area is small, with one belt. Restrooms are available and include a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Pathein's market, located near the clock tower, is a lively place to sample local snacks like mont lone yay baw (rice balls in coconut milk) and buy fresh produce.

The surrounding Ayeyarwady Delta is one of Myanmar's most important agricultural regions, producing rice, beans, and fish. The landscape is flat and green, crisscrossed by canals and rivers. Pathein itself is a laid-back city, far less touristy than Yangon or Mandalay, which gives it an authentic feel. Most visitors are domestic travellers, but a growing number of independent tourists are discovering the area.

Why does someone fly into Pathein? Typically to visit the umbrellas workshops or to explore the delta's waterways. The airport makes it possible to reach Pathein in 40 minutes from Yangon instead of a five-hour bus ride. It also serves as a transit point for travellers heading further into the delta, such as to the coastal town of Ngapali (though you would need to continue by road).
