Getting There

The airport is a short ride from Keng Tung town. The main road, Thiri Road, connects the terminal to the city centre, a distance of roughly two to three kilometres. Taxis and motorbike taxis (often called 'motodops' locally) wait at the curb when flights arrive. Fares are negotiable but expect around 2,000 to 3,000 kyat for a motorbike taxi or 5,000 to 7,000 kyat for a car into town. There is no public bus service. Most drivers speak basic English but it helps to have the name of your hotel written in Burmese. For those driving themselves, the airport has a small car park that is wheelchair-accessible.

If you are coming from the Thai border at Tachilek, the road distance is about 150 kilometres via Route 4. Journeys take three to four hours by private car or shared minibus, winding through mountain passes and tea plantations. Shared minibuses depart from Tachilek's main bus station and drop passengers at Keng Tung's clock tower, from where a short taxi ride reaches the airport. Note that crossing the border at Mae Sai-Tachilek requires a passport and, for most nationalities, a visa for Myanmar. Flights from Yangon to Keng Tung take roughly one hour and forty minutes, offering a far quicker alternative to the two-day bus journey.

Inside the Terminal

The terminal at Keng Tung is compact and functional. Entering the building, passengers find a single check-in hall with a few counters, a security screening area, and a small departure lounge. Baggage storage is available near the main entrance – useful if you have a long layover or want to explore town before a later flight. The airport is confirmed to have wheelchair-accessible entrances, car parking, and a wheelchair-accessible toilet, making it one of the more accessible small airports in Myanmar. There is also a changing table in the restroom, a rare convenience in this part of the country.

The atmosphere inside is calm. Flights are few, so the terminal never feels crowded. Air conditioning is limited; ceiling fans provide relief, but on hot days (common from March to May) it can feel stuffy. There are no retail shops or restaurants inside the terminal, though a small kiosk may sell bottled water and snacks. Passengers should bring their own provisions. The surrounding hills are dotted with hill-tribe villages, many accessible by day trips involving hiking or motorbike rental.

Keng Tung has a history dating back centuries. It was once the capital of a Shan principality and a key stop on the ancient trade route between China, Myanmar, and Thailand. As a result, the architecture and cuisine reflect Chinese and Tai influences alongside Burmese. The central market, Muang Lay Market, is a vibrant mix of produce, textiles, and snacks – worth visiting early in the morning. The town is also known for its hot springs, located about 10 kilometres outside the centre, and for the Hletha cultural village, where visitors can learn about the traditions of local ethnic minorities.

For travellers, Keng Tung offers a slower pace than Yangon or Mandalay. It is a launching point for trekking in the Shan Hills, exploring the Golden Triangle region, or crossing into Thailand via the Tachilek border. The airport's existence makes these trips feasible for those short on time. But it also serves local communities – the flights carry government officials, traders, and residents connecting to the rest of Myanmar. The airport's schedule is tied to demand; flights are infrequent and subject to change, particularly during the monsoon season (June-October) when weather can cause cancellations.

Keng Tung Airport does not operate every day. Flights are typically scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but this varies by season and airline.
