Online check-ins are useless. Especially when you don't have bags, and you want to pass through quickly. You still have to queue. On the other hand, besides Maputo it's the only airport with a decent restaurant. Most in Mozambique have nothing at all.
Sadly be careful with bribary, a lot of bathrooms the door doesn't work and no toilet paper. Most flights usually get reschedule A LOT.
The airport has had some improvements and although small, is functional. The staff were helpful and friendly. The bathrooms are modernized and clean. They monitor who can coming in and out, which has the benefit of really cutting down on unwanted crowds.
Corrupt officials and workers asking for bribes and money at every stage . Avoid this place if you can . They held our passports so they could extort money from us , After arguing with them and demanding for an explanation they finally gave us our passports back. This country is gone to the dogs.
Aeroporto de Nampula (NPL) serves as the primary air gateway to northern Mozambique, connecting the city of Nampula – the capital of Nampula Province – with domestic destinations and a handful of regional routes. As the third-largest city in Mozambique after Maputo and Beira, Nampula is a vital commercial and administrative centre, and its airport facilitates the movement of business travellers, government officials, and tourists heading to the nearby coast or inland areas.
The airport handles a steady flow of domestic flights operated by carriers such as LAM Mozambique Airlines and regional charter services. While its passenger numbers are modest compared to Maputo’s international hub, Nampula Airport plays an essential role in regional connectivity, linking the populous northern provinces to the rest of the country.
Nampula Airport is situated approximately 2 kilometres southwest of the city centre, making it one of the most conveniently located airports in Mozambique. The short distance means travellers can reach downtown Nampula in under ten minutes by car or taxi.
Getting to and from the airport:
For those heading further afield, the airport is a starting point for journeys to Ilha de Moçambique (about 2.5 hours by road), Nacala (roughly 2 hours), and the Quirimbas archipelago. Several car rental agencies have desks in the arrivals area.
The terminal, while compact, provides essential amenities for a comfortable travel experience:
Note that the airport is not open 24 hours; it operates during flight schedules, typically from early morning until the last departure, which can be around 9 pm based on peak hours. Passengers should confirm their flight times and plan accordingly.
Nampula is the heart of northern Mozambique, a region known for its vibrant culture, history, and natural beauty. The city itself is a bustling hub for trade in cashew nuts, cotton, and gemstones. Its central market is a kaleidoscope of colours and sounds, offering local crafts, fresh produce, and textiles.
A short distance east lies Ilha de Moçambique, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This coral island was the capital of Portuguese East Africa for centuries and features well-preserved colonial architecture, including the Fort of São Sebastião and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Baluarte – one of the oldest European buildings in the southern hemisphere.
Further north, the Quirimbas National Park protects a chain of islands and coastal forests, renowned for snorkelling, diving, and pristine beaches. The region is also a gateway to the remote and unspoiled coastline of Cabo Delgado province, though travellers should check current security advisories.
Agriculture dominates the economy, with Nampula being the country’s leading producer of cassava, maize, and groundnuts. The area is also rich in cultural traditions, including the Makua people’s music, dance, and intricate wooden carvings.
