Kong Gang Guan Zhi Guan,Air Traffic Control(ATC) tower staff is sooooo nice,so kind, very cheerful, professional and clear to understand. especially for private jet pilots or private helicopter pilots, we often experience difficulty to repeat ATC phrase because of too fast speaking w uncleared voice. unlike other airports' ATC, Kouchi Airport ATC is the best. as for the airport terminal, not so many shops or res though, easy to walk around.
Pretty nice domestic flight-only airport. There's not much enough to see in the airport terminal except for the extensive souvenir shops and a few tataki restaurants. The waving gallery on the rooftop of the terminal building, like most Japanese airports, is very pleasant and surprisingly spacious, although the airport itself doesn't see that many flights. The airport bus to downtown Kochi is located at the first floor, just outside the airport terminal. I think given the proximity of the airport to the nearest rail lines (Gomen-Nahari line and the Tosaden streetcar - the latter ended short at neighborhood of Gomen), it could've been better if one of these was extended to serve the airport, giving affordable and more seamless connection to the rest of the city, and even far afield throughout other parts of the prefecture. FYI, if you are fond of unconventional souvenirs, you can find cute Tataki Pillow that is sold at the airside after the security screening.
There is a sign on the piller,, but I did not see it. The desk clerk was great and directed me to the check-in counter.
It's not as lively as other international airports with malls and all that, but Kochi Ryoma Airport serves its purpose. It has enough restaurants and omiyage stores, many seats available to rest on, and of course clean and comfortable automatic bathrooms. Also, there are displays for Kochi's popular places where you can take photos and make you feel like you've already toured the place.
Kochi Airport (also known as Kochi Ryoma Airport) serves as the primary gateway to Kochi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Japan. Located in Nankoku city, the airport handles domestic flights connecting the region to major hubs such as Tokyo (Haneda), Nagoya, Osaka (Itami and Kansai), and Fukuoka. It also accommodates seasonal international charters, primarily from East Asia. The airport is named after Sakamoto Ryoma, a prominent 19th-century samurai and reformer who hailed from Kochi, reflecting the area's deep historical pride. With its compact but modern terminal, the airport is designed to facilitate seamless travel for both business and leisure passengers. Peak traffic typically occurs in the mid-afternoon, around 3–4 pm, when several arrivals and departures coincide. The airport is not open 24 hours a day; its operating hours align with flight schedules, so travellers should confirm their flight times in advance.
Kochi Airport is situated approximately 15 kilometres southeast of central Kochi City, the capital of Kochi Prefecture. The airport's address is 100-1 Ino, Nankoku, Kochi 783-0054, Japan. The region is characterised by mountainous terrain and the Pacific coastline, making road access well-connected but occasionally winding. The most convenient way to reach the airport is via the Kochi Expressway, which links Nankoku to Kochi City and other parts of Shikoku. Buses run regularly between the airport and Kochi Station (JR line) as well as major hotels and attractions; the journey takes about 30–40 minutes. Taxis are also available, with a trip to central Kochi costing roughly 3,000–4,000 yen. For those driving, the airport offers both short-term and long-term parking, including designated spaces for wheelchair users. Car rental agencies are located on-site, providing options for exploring the scenic rural areas of Kochi Prefecture. Nearby cities accessible from the airport include Tosa, Sukumo, and Shimanto, though many travellers use rental cars since public transit to remote areas is less frequent.
The airport provides a range of essential services to ensure a comfortable transit experience. Confirmed amenities include wheelchair-accessible car parks, entrances, and toilets, making the terminal fully navigable for passengers with reduced mobility. A dedicated baggage storage service allows travellers to stow luggage for a few hours or days, ideal for those on layovers or wishing to explore the local area without heavy bags. Standard toilets are clean and well-maintained, and there are baby changing tables available in restrooms, catering to families with infants. While the airport does not boast extensive shopping, a small gift shop sells local specialities such as Yuzu-based products, sake, and traditional crafts. A café and vending machines offer light refreshments and drinks. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal. Please note that the airport does not have a dedicated business lounge, but seating areas are ample and include power outlets for charging devices. For any inquiries, the information desk is staffed during operation hours.
Kochi Prefecture occupies the southernmost part of Shikoku and is known for its rugged coastline, pristine rivers, and rich cultural heritage. The region is celebrated as the birthplace of Sakamoto Ryoma, and his legacy is visible at the Ryoma Memorial Museum and in central Kochi City. Nature enthusiasts flock to the Shimanto River, often called Japan's last clear stream, where traditional fishing methods and canoeing are popular. The city of Kochi itself features the historic Kochi Castle, one of only twelve original castles in Japan, and the lively Hirome Market, where visitors sample fresh seafood and local sake. The area is also a key stop on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, a 1,200-year-old Buddhist circuit of 88 temples; several temples lie in or near Kochi. Agriculture thrives here, notably Yuzu citrus, rice, and sake brewing. Travelers often use Kochi Airport as a convenient entry point to explore these attractions, combining city culture with rural landscapes.
