New airport and a better one compared to the last time I visited this place. The airport is located in near the town center and around 10 minutes from the Speedboat terminal with Bentor or tricycle bike. It will cost you IDR10.000 to go to the terminal and you can get the tricycle at the parking of the airport. There's only only flight and airline, so in case the weather is bad than another option is take the ship.
Hopefully you can have flight to/from Davao or Gensan Philippines or to Manado or Talaud
very small airport.. Garuda Indonesia and Wings Air operated to here
Lack of ground crew made us wait even longer for our baggage.
Melonguane Airport (IATA: MNA) is a domestic airport serving the Talaud Islands Regency in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is the primary aviation gateway to the remote archipelago, which sits near the border with the Philippines. The airport primarily handles flights from Manado, the provincial capital, operated by small regional airlines like Wings Air and Aviastar. Its single runway and compact terminal reflect its role as a lifeline for the local population, connecting the islands to the rest of Indonesia for trade, medical referrals, government business, and tourism.
The airport sees relatively low traffic, with flights scheduled a few times per week rather than daily. Aircraft are typically turboprops such as the ATR 42 or 72, given the runway length. Passengers are a mix of local residents, government officials, and adventurous travellers headed to the Talaud Islands' famed diving sites or cultural attractions.
Melonguane Airport is located in the village of Melonguane, on Karakelong Island—the largest in the Talaud chain. It lies approximately 3 kilometres from the town centre of Melonguane, the regency capital. The airport's address is in the Talaud Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Getting to the airport is straightforward. From central Melonguane, visitors can take an ojek (motorcycle taxi) or a local minibus (angkot) for a short ride. The journey takes under 10 minutes. Private car hire is also available through hotels or local contacts. There is no public bus service directly to the terminal, but arranging transport in advance is easy.
The nearest major city is Manado, about 280 kilometres to the southwest as the crow flies. Most travellers reach Talaud by flying from Manado's Sam Ratulangi International Airport (MDC). Flights take approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. There are no land routes to the airport, as the island is separated from mainland Sulawesi by the Molucca Sea.
Melonguane Airport is a small facility with essential amenities to keep passengers comfortable. The terminal offers:
The airport does not have restaurants, shops, or lounges. Passengers are advised to bring their own food and water, especially if there are delays. There is a small waiting area with basic seating. For assistance, passengers can approach airline staff or airport personnel on-site.
The Talaud Islands are a regency within North Sulawesi, consisting of over 100 islands, though only a few are inhabited. The archipelago is part of the Coral Triangle, renowned for its exceptional marine biodiversity. Divers from around the world visit Talaud for pristine coral reefs, walls, and pelagic species like tuna and manta rays. The islands also harbour unique ecosystems on land, including endemic bird species and the Talaud bear cuscus, a marsupial.
Culturally, the population is predominantly Christian, with strong influences from Minahasa and Sangir traditions. Local festivals, such as the Talaud Cultural Festival, showcase traditional dances, music, and boat races. The region's economy relies on fishing, coconut production, and a growing ecotourism sector.
Melonguane town itself offers basic services: a market, a few guesthouses, and a port for inter-island ferries. Nearby attractions include the Talaud Islands Marine Tourism Park, and the small islet of Miangas, the northernmost inhabited island of Indonesia. The airport serves as the main entry point for those seeking remote island adventures.
For a smooth journey, arrive at least 60 minutes before departure. Given the limited facilities, it is wise to prepare accordingly – pack snacks, water, and any necessary medications in your carry-on luggage.
Melonguane Airport may be modest, but it opens the door to one of Indonesia's most remote and beautiful corners. Whether you are a diver, nature lover, or cultural explorer, this airport is the start of an unforgettable experience in the Talaud Islands.
