Kolhapur Airport is small but neat and well-managed. The staff is helpful, and check-in is usually quick. Great for short domestic trips!
Kolhapur Airport is a small but beautiful airport. We flew in from Tirupati for darshan, and the place was surprisingly quiet and almost empty. It doesn't seem like a lot of flights land or take off from here, which actually makes the experience very calm and peaceful. As we stepped outside, the only people around were a few rickshaw drivers--no usual airport crowd. One thing that really stood out was the airport's look--it's quite new and the wall paintings inside are absolutely stunning, adding a lovely local touch to the space. A smooth and peaceful entry into the city!
It is one of the regional airports in Maharashtra, India. Its a small, nice and clean airport.
The new Kolhapur Airport is truly impressive! It beautifully blends the charm of old heritage with modern design. The people here are warm, friendly, and always ready to help.
Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj Airport (formerly Kolhapur Airport) is a domestic airport serving the city of Kolhapur in the southwestern part of Maharashtra, India. It is named after Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj, a notable figure from the Maratha Empire. The airport primarily handles regional flights, connecting Kolhapur to major hubs like Mumbai, with seasonal or charter services to other destinations. It is a relatively small facility, used by business travellers, pilgrims visiting Kolhapur's famous temples, and tourists exploring the cultural heart of the Deccan plateau. The airport is operated by the Airports Authority of India and plays a vital role in improving access to this historically rich region.
The airport is situated approximately 8 kilometres (5 miles) southeast of Kolhapur city centre, near the village of Ujlaiwadi. It lies off the Kolhapur–Sangli Highway (NH 166H), making it easily reachable by road. Kolhapur itself is located on the banks of the Panchganga River, in the foothills of the Western Ghats. The airport's proximity to the city means that taxi rides take around 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Auto-rickshaws are also available from the city, though for comfort most travellers prefer pre-booked taxis or app-based ride services. Parking at the airport is limited but adequate for the traffic volume. For those driving, the terminal is wheelchair-accessible from the car park. The nearest major city with an international airport is Mumbai, about 370 kilometres northwest, while Pune is roughly 230 kilometres north. The airport serves as a convenient alternative for travellers heading to Kolhapur and nearby destinations like Ratnagiri, Goa (via road), or the hill stations of the Western Ghats.
Despite its small size, Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj Airport offers essential amenities focused on passenger comfort and accessibility. The terminal building is equipped with wheelchair-accessible features including the car park, entrance, and toilets, ensuring ease of movement for passengers with reduced mobility. Baggage storage is available for those who wish to explore the city without luggage before a flight or after arrival. Clean toilets are maintained within the terminal. The airport has basic on-site services such as a small snack counter or vending machines (subject to availability) and seating areas. There is no dedicated lounge or extensive shopping, but the airport's efficiency means passengers can proceed quickly through security. Peak hours are around 11:00 am and 12:00 pm, when flights to and from Mumbai typically operate, so arriving early during these times is advisable. Wi-Fi may be available, but connectivity varies; it is best to check with the airline or airport staff upon arrival.
Kolhapur is a city steeped in history and tradition, best known as the seat of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and later the princely state of Kolhapur. The city's most iconic landmark is the Mahalakshmi Temple, a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to the goddess Lakshmi, dating back to the 7th century. The temple's intricate architecture and spiritual significance draw pilgrims from across India. Kolhapur is also famous for its distinctive leather footwear, known as Kolhapuri chappals, which are handcrafted and exported worldwide. The region is a hub for wrestling (kushti), with historic akhadas (training grounds) that have produced many national champions. The local cuisine is a highlight, featuring spicy mutton dishes like Kolhapuri misal and pandhra rassa (white mutton curry). Geographically, Kolhapur sits on the edge of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its biodiversity. The nearby hill stations of Panhala and Jyotiba offer scenic views and trekking opportunities. For wildlife enthusiasts, the Chandoli National Park and Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary are within a few hours' drive. The region's economy is driven by agriculture (sugarcane, grapes), manufacturing, and tourism. Travelers fly into Kolhapur to access these attractions more conveniently than via road from Pune or Mumbai.
The airport is not open 24 hours a day; its operating hours align with flight schedules. Typically, it opens a few hours before the first departure and closes after the last arrival. It is advisable to arrive at least one to two hours before a domestic flight. The airport's contact number is +91 1800 11 0402 (toll-free), which can be used for general inquiries. There is no official website provided consistently, but information can be found through the Airports Authority of India portal or local travel websites. The airport code is KLH (IATA) and VAKP (ICAO). Parking is available for short and long stays, with charges modest. Since the airport is small, facilities like currency exchange or ATMs may not be available inside; it is wise to carry sufficient cash or use nearby ATMs in the city. For up-to-date flight information, passengers should check with their airline directly. Despite its limitations, Kolhapur Airport offers a stress-free travel experience compared to larger airports, with quick check-in and security processes.
