Domestic Airport
5 features verified at Kandla Airport
Kandla Airport, located in Anjar near Gandhidham in Gujarat, serves the industrial and port areas around Kandla/Deendayal Port. It is operated by the Airports Authority of India and mainly handles domestic flights. What's Good: Close to Industrial / Port Area Because it serves Gandhidham, Kandla, and the Deendayal Port region, it has the potential to be very useful for business travelers, technical staff, and people whose work relates to ports and industries nearby. Good location. Existing Basic Infrastructure Though minimal, it already has a functional runway, terminal, apron, and basic navigation aids. This means improvement is more about upgrading rather than building from scratch. Support for Expansion There is government / local industrial body interest in restoring and improving its connectivity. Plans exist for a greenfield airport project, and land allocation (600-1000 acres) has been discussed. Potential Demand The industrial growth in the Kutch region, the expansion of port operations, tourism potential, all suggest that if air connectivity is good, demand could increase. Local bodies have been pressing for better schedules and routes. What's Hindering: Very Limited Passenger Capacity Handling ~100 passengers at a time is very low. Larger or busier flights are hard to accommodate. Runway and Aircraft Size Limitations The runway length and apron limits prevent larger aircraft (besides turboprops like ATRs) from operating. So international flights or flights using larger jets are not feasible currently. Irregular / Low Flight Connectivity Frequent cancellations, irregular services, and limited destinations are recurring complains. This affects reliability and usefulness, especially for business travelers. Insufficient Night & Support Facilities Though some reports say the airport is equipped for night landings, actual implementation has issues due to lack of staff or equipment. Also, navigation/landing aids are basic. Terminal & Passenger Amenities Weak Because of its small size, facilities are minimal (no or limited lounges, limited shops etc.). Also, inability to expand in the present location due to surrounding development. Lack of Consistent Policy / Slow Infrastructure Upgrades While master plans exist (e.g. AAI's master plan till 2049), acquiring land, getting clearances, executing expansion or building a greenfield airport has been slow. What Needs Improvement / Suggestions Increase runway length, widen apron, allow for bigger aircraft; improve night-landing facilities fully. Improve terminal capacity and amenities: waiting lounges, refreshments, better passenger handling capacity. Increase frequency of flights, add more destinations (especially to big metros: Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru etc.) to make connectivity meaningful. Ensure reliability: fewer cancellations, better scheduling, more staff and maintenance support so flights operate as per schedule. Explore the proposed greenfield airport to overcome limitations of the present site; ensure connectivity (road / rail) to city centers; ensure environmental and community concerns are addressed. Overall Verdict 3/5 (with potential to rise) Kandla Airport in its current form is functional but quite limited. For people who need basic domestic connectivity, especially in relation to industrial or port work, it serves a purpose. But for regular passenger convenience, business travel, tourism, it falls short because of its size, capacity, and unreliable service. However, with the planned upgrades (greenfield airport), improved infrastructure, and better policy attention, it could become a much more important hub for Kutch and the western coast.
I have never seen a small airport in my life, it was very new experience for me, iam a sailor and came at kandla sea port and was going home, i was excited that kandla has an airport, place is very neat and clean, check in and security was the fastest i have done in my life, small waiting room with a snack corner, i was flying to mumbai on a small spice jet flight. Its one of a kind airport in india i think.
Very small Airport named as Kandla Airport IXY near at Gandhidham. The airport is neat and clean. Only two direct flight operated by SpiceJet to Delhi and Mumbai.
Kandla Airport is one of the smallest airports in India. Only a couple of flights operated at the airport. The waiting area is very much a small for check-in, and even people can not stand in the check-in area. Departure is managed by two big rooms hall only. No belt or trolleys are required to operate the business. The same is applicable for arrivals. However, to see the demand, the Kutch area must have one complete world-class airport.
Kandla Airport, also known as Gandhidham Airport, is a domestic airport serving the Kutch district of Gujarat, India. Located near the town of Anjar, it primarily handles flights from major Indian carriers connecting to Mumbai and other cities. The airport plays a key role for business travellers heading to the nearby Kandla Port – one of India's major seaports – and for pilgrims visiting the revered Mata no Madh temple. It is also used by tourists exploring the starkly beautiful landscapes of the Great Rann of Kutch. Though small in scale, the airport offers essential services for a convenient regional travel experience.
Kandla Airport is situated approximately 8 kilometres north of Anjar town and about 10 kilometres south of Gandhidham, the twin city of Kandla. It lies on National Highway 41, making it easily accessible by road. The airport's address is Anjar Highway, near Gandhidham.
For those heading to the famous Rann of Utsav festival site (Dholavira or Dhordo), a taxi from Kandla Airport takes about 2–3 hours. The airport's location makes it a convenient entry point for the western part of the Kutch region.
Kandla Airport, while modest, provides essential amenities for a comfortable journey. All confirmed facilities are designed with accessibility in mind:
Additional amenities include a small waiting area, basic seating, and a ticket counter. Food and beverage options are limited to vending machines or a small snack kiosk; passengers are advised to carry their own refreshments for longer waits. Shopping is not available beyond a few essentials. Free Wi-Fi may not be reliably offered, so plan accordingly. The airport does not have a lounge or hotel, but nearby Gandhidham has several lodging options. For passengers with special needs, the airport staff are generally helpful; it is advisable to request assistance in advance from your airline.
The Kutch district is one of India's most unique geographical and cultural regions. It is home to the Great Rann of Kutch, a vast salt desert that transforms into a dazzling white landscape during the dry season and becomes a wetland during the monsoon. The area is also known for its vibrant handicrafts, especially embroidery, bandhani (tie-dye), and mirror work. Major attractions include:
The region's economy is driven by the Kandla Port, one of India's oldest major ports handling cargo like crude oil, salt, and textiles. Agriculture, salt farming, and tourism also play significant roles. The climate is arid, with scorching summers and mild winters; the best time to visit is between October and March.
Kandla Airport serves as a functional and welcoming gateway to the cultural and natural wonders of Kutch. Its compact size ensures easy navigation, while the focus on wheelchair accessibility makes it suitable for travellers with mobility challenges. Whether you're coming for business at the port or to witness the surreal Rann, this airport is your first stop in a memorable journey.
