Skiathos International Airport Alexandros Papadiamantis lies along the southern coast of Skiathos island, with a single runway that ends just metres from the sea. The terminal building is compact — roughly the size of a large village hall — and handles seasonal traffic from across Europe during the summer months. The airport is named after Alexandros Papadiamantis, a Greek novelist born on the island in 1851. For most of the year the terminal is quiet, but between May and October it processes a steady flow of charter and scheduled flights. The short runway (1,628 metres) is famous in aviation circles for its low approach over the water and the beach at Kokkines, where plane spotters gather to watch aircraft touchdown almost at their feet.
The airport is 2.5 kilometres east of Skiathos Town, the island's main settlement and port. A public bus runs between the town and the airport every 30 minutes during the summer season; the journey takes about ten minutes and costs a few euros. Taxis are plentiful at the rank outside arrivals, with a fixed fare of around €10-15 to Skiathos Town (confirm the price before boarding). Rental car desks operate inside the terminal from several international companies. Driving from the town is straightforward — follow the coastal road east past the harbour and the airport appears on the left. Parking is free in the airport's designated lot, which has spaces for around 200 cars and is a short walk from the terminal entrance. During peak times in July and August, the lot can fill up; it is wise to be dropped off rather than drive if you are on a tight schedule.
The terminal consists of a single two-storey building: check-in and departures on the ground floor, arrivals on the first floor reachable by stairs or lift. The departures hall has a small café, a shop selling snacks and drinks, and a handful of seats. There are two security lanes, which can create queues of 15–20 minutes at the busiest times. A baggage storage service is available in the arrivals area — useful if you have a few hours to explore before a flight. The airport has a wheelchair-accessible car park, a wheelchair-accessible toilet, and a changing table in the accessible toilet. The atmosphere is efficient but informal; staff are used to handling large numbers of holidaymakers. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal. The only frustration can be the lack of air conditioning in the departures lounge on the hottest days — bring water and a fan if you tend to feel the heat. Boarding is announced over a public address system, and passengers walk to the aircraft across the apron.
Skiathos is one of the Sporades islands in the northwest Aegean Sea. The island covers 50 square kilometres and has a population of around 6,000, which swells to ten times that in summer. The landscape is green — pine forests cover much of the interior, and the coastline is dotted with sandy coves and dramatic limestone cliffs. The most famous beach is Koukounaries, a long stretch of golden sand backed by a forest, consistently rated among the best in Greece. Lalaria Beach, accessible only by boat, features white pebbles and a sea arch. Skiathos Town is a lively port with whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and a waterfront lined with tavernas and bars. The island has a strong literary connection through Alexandros Papadiamantis; his childhood home in Skiathos Town is now a museum. The airport itself is a destination for aviation enthusiasts: the beach at Kokkines, directly under the approach path, offers views of aircraft flying a few metres overhead. The runway is so short that pilots must perform a specialised approach, descending over the sea and touching down precisely. This spectacle has made Skiathos a top spot for plane spotting worldwide. Beyond the beach, the island has a mild nightlife, with clubs in Skiathos Town and a quieter scene elsewhere. Hiking trails cross the pine forests, and boat trips explore the surrounding islands of Skopelos and Alonissos. Most visitors come for a beach holiday, but the island also has a cultural heritage worth exploring — Byzantine churches, a 14th-century Venetian fortress, and a traditional way of life that persists outside the summer months.
The airport operates seasonally for commercial flights, typically from late April to late October. During the winter, only occasional private or charter flights use the runway. The terminal is open on flight days roughly two hours before the first departure and closes after the last arrival. Check specific hours on the official website at http://www.jsi-airport.gr/. The airport phone number is +30 24270 22100, but emails are monitored irregularly. For updated flight information, check the website or your airline directly. If you are driving to the airport, note that the car park is free but unguarded — take valuables with you. For a smooth experience, aim to arrive at least 90 minutes before departure for Schengen flights and two hours for non-Schengen. The busiest hours are Monday to Thursday around noon, as noted in the airport's schedule. One concrete piece of advice: if you are flying out on a weekday, book a taxi in advance between 11 am and 12 pm, because the queue can swell to a 40-minute wait.
