Busiest on Mondays around 1 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
This is a small airport, the staff were friendly and check in and security couldn't have been easier. One runway, one cafe, one line for security, the cafe was closed so they provided free water and coffee in the departure lounge. There are some display boards showing the history of the airport and a cabinet with some artifacts.
Teeny tiny little airport, absolutely love it!
Small, clean, and very efficient. Everything went smoothly, no crowds, no stress. Perfect for regional travel -- nothing to complain about!
Very nice and small airport. Unfortunately not very much used these days. Hopefully, activities will restart soon.
Jyväskylä Airport (JYV) is a regional airport located in Tikkakoski, about 20 kilometres north of Jyväskylä city centre in central Finland. The airport serves the Jyväskylä region, including the city itself and the surrounding municipalities of the Central Finland region. It is a modest facility primarily handling domestic flights within Finland, with seasonal charter services to Mediterranean and other holiday destinations. The airport is operated by Finavia, the state-owned enterprise that manages most airports in Finland. While it is not a major hub, Jyväskylä Airport plays an important role for business travellers, students, and tourists visiting the Lake District or attending events in the area. The airport is also used for general aviation and flight training, and it has a history as a former air force base, which is reflected in its location adjacent to the Finnish Air Force’s Tikkakoski base.
Jyväskylä Airport lies in the village of Tikkakoski, approximately 20 km north of Jyväskylä city centre. The airport is easily reached by car via regional road 637, which connects to highway E63 (also known as Valtatie 4 or Highway 4), the main north-south route through Finland. Taxis are available at the terminal, and ride-sharing services operate in the area. There is also a public bus service from Jyväskylä city centre, with buses that run to Tikkakoski and stop near the airport. The Finavia-operated bus service (the “Lentokenttäbussi”) provides connections timed to flight schedules, though travellers should check the latest timetable as services may vary. For those driving, the airport offers both short-term and long-term parking, with spaces for disabled passengers clearly marked near the entrance. The airport is about 1.5 hours’ drive from Tampere and roughly 3.5 hours from Helsinki, making it a convenient gateway for central Finland.
Jyväskylä Airport is a compact terminal, but it offers essential amenities to ensure a comfortable journey. The airport is fully accessible, with a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilet facilities. There are dedicated changing tables in the toilets, making it family-friendly. Baggage storage is available for passengers who need to store luggage, though it is advisable to check availability with the airport directly. Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the terminal, allowing travellers to stay connected. The terminal also includes standard toilets and a small waiting area. There is no large-scale shopping or dining, but a café or kiosk may be available during operating hours; it is best to confirm directly. The airport’s compact size means that all facilities are within easy walking distance, and the check-in and security areas are efficient for the volume of traffic.
The Jyväskylä region lies in the heart of the Finnish Lake District, an area renowned for its thousands of lakes, forests, and outdoor recreational opportunities. Jyväskylä itself is a vibrant university city, known for its modern architecture (including buildings by Alvar Aalto) and a lively cultural scene. The city is a hub for education, technology, and winter sports. The nearby Laajavuori ski resort offers downhill and cross-country skiing in winter, while summer brings hiking, cycling, and water activities on Lake Päijänne, one of Finland’s largest lakes. The airport serves as a gateway for both leisure and business travellers: visitors come to explore the lake region, attend conferences, or visit the numerous summer cottages that dot the shoreline. The region also has a strong industrial base, with companies in forestry, paper, and machinery. Jyväskylä Airport, though small, provides a direct link for those who want to avoid the longer journey from Helsinki or Tampere.
Jyväskylä Airport is not open 24 hours; its operating hours are tied to flight schedules, so it is essential to confirm opening times before travelling. The peak hours for passenger traffic are around midday, with flights typically scheduled in the late morning and early afternoon. For the most up-to-date information, including the current schedule and any temporary changes, passengers should visit the official Finavia website: https://www.finavia.fi/fi/lentoasemat/jyvaskyla (available in Finnish and English). The airport can be contacted by phone at +358 20 7085761. Parking fees apply, and payment can be made via credit card or mobile app. As the airport is small, security checks are quick, but passengers are advised to arrive at least an hour before domestic departures and two hours before international charter flights. For those with special assistance needs, the airport offers wheelchair services; it is recommended to notify the airline or the airport in advance.
