Overview

Labasa Airport (IATA: LBS) serves as the primary air transport hub for the northern part of Fiji’s second largest island, Vanua Levu. It is a domestic airport handling regular flights between Labasa and Nadi International Airport, as well as services to Suva and other domestic destinations. The airport is used predominantly by residents of the Northern Division and visitors heading to the towns of Labasa, Savusavu, and the surrounding agricultural and coastal areas. Given its role in connecting the north to the rest of Fiji, Labasa Airport is a key piece of infrastructure for business, medical travel, and tourism.

Location & Access

Labasa Airport is situated approximately 5 kilometres south of Labasa town centre, on the eastern bank of the Labasa River near its mouth. The airport is easily reached by road via the Labasa–Savusavu Highway, which runs along the coast. Taxis and private vehicles are the main modes of transport; there is no scheduled public bus service directly to the terminal, but informal minibuses and shared taxis operate from the town market area. For those driving, the road is sealed and well-maintained, and the journey from Labasa town takes about 10 minutes. The airport also serves visitors heading to the southern coast of Vanua Levu, including Savusavu, a 90-minute drive along the winding coastal road. The area around the airport is predominantly rural, with sugarcane fields and small settlements.

Labasa Airport is a modest terminal, reflecting the scale of its operations. The following facilities are confirmed:

As the airport handles only domestic flights, there is no customs or immigration processing.

Vanua Levu, meaning "Great Land" in Fijian, is the second largest island in Fiji and offers a distinctly different experience from the more tourist-heavy Viti Levu. Labasa, the island’s largest town, has a strong Indo-Fijian cultural influence, reflected in its architecture, food, and festivals. The economy is based on sugar cane farming, with surrounding plantations stretching inland. The area is known for its rich agricultural land, and the Labasa River delta creates fertile plains.

For travellers, the region’s attractions include the colourful Labasa Market, the nearby Waisali Rainforest Reserve with its nature walks and waterfalls, and the pristine beaches and coral reefs along the northern coast. The Great Sea Reef, one of the longest barrier reefs in the world, lies offshore, offering excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities. Savusavu, on the southern side of the island, is a popular destination for eco-tourism and hot springs. Many visitors fly into Labasa as a gateway to explore Vanua Levu’s natural beauty, away from the crowds of the main tourist centres.

Practical Information

Hours of operation: Labasa Airport does not operate continuously; it is open primarily during flight times. The busiest periods are around 8 am and 9 am, when morning departures are scheduled. At other times, the terminal may be closed or have very limited staffing. It is advisable to arrive at least one hour before your flight departure.
