One of the smallest airports I've been to. Overall nice, just limited but it's size.
Small but organized very well
Easy-fly plane scheduled for the first flight at 6 am, but we didnt leave until 7 am.. check in here is not fast at all. If you have a connecting fly in bogota then make sure you leave a few hours time in between your flight from here. Its a small airport which does make it easier because flights are not always full.
Basic small airport with needed services at villavicencio. Few airlines come to this airport Avianca, Clic among others...
Vanguardia Airport (IATA: VVC) serves as the primary gateway to Villavicencio, the capital of Meta department, and the broader Llanos Orientales (Eastern Plains) region of Colombia. This domestic airport handles scheduled flights connecting the plains to Bogotá and other major cities, playing a vital role for business travellers, tourists, and cargo transport. The airport is named after the Vanguardia neighborhood in Villavicencio and is operated by Aerocivil, Colombia's civil aviation authority. While modest in size compared to Bogotá's El Dorado, Vanguardia is well suited to the region's traffic, handling aircraft such as the ATR 42/72 and other regional jets.
Vanguardia Airport is situated approximately 10 kilometres south of Villavicencio's city centre, along the road leading to the neighbouring municipality of Acacías. The airport is easily reachable by taxi, rideshare, or private vehicle from any point in the city; a typical ride from downtown Villavicencio takes around 15–20 minutes depending on traffic. For those arriving from Bogotá, the drive covers roughly 120 kilometres via the Autopista al Llano, a journey of about two to three hours. Many travellers opt to fly instead, with several daily flights offered by airlines such as Avianca and Satena. Bus services also connect the airport to the city centre, though they are less frequent. Given the airport's importance to the region, the access road is well maintained and easily navigable.
Vanguardia Airport provides essential services to ensure a comfortable travel experience. The following amenities are confirmed:
The airport is compact, so navigating between check-in, security, and gates is straightforward. While dining and shopping options are limited, passengers can find basic snacks and beverages at a small café or vending machines. It is advisable to bring any necessary supplies, especially during peak hours (around 3–4 pm) when queues may be longer.
Villavicencio is famously known as the "Gateway to the Llanos", the vast tropical grasslands that stretch east towards Venezuela. The Llanos Orientales are a land of wide skies, cattle ranches, and a distinct cultural identity shaped by the llaneros – the Colombian cowboys. Visitors come to experience traditional joropo music and dance, as well as the region's hearty cuisine, particularly mamona (roasted veal). The city itself is a bustling commercial hub, home to the Monumento al Llanero and the Bioparque Los Ocarros, a conservation park featuring native wildlife such as the Orinoco crocodile and giant anteaters.
Beyond Villavicencio, the department of Meta offers spectacular natural attractions. The Sierra de la Macarena, a mountain range isolated from the Andes, harbours Caño Cristales – a river famous for its vibrant colours due to aquatic plants. Other destinations include the Serranía del Chiribiquete (a UNESCO World Heritage site, though remote) and numerous eco-lodges along the plains. The region is also an important centre for agriculture (rice, oil palm) and oil extraction, contributing to its economic importance.
