Fuyuan Dongji Airport sits on a flat plain at the eastern edge of Heilongjiang Province, less than 30 kilometres from the Russian border at the confluence of the Ussuri and Amur rivers. It is the easternmost civilian airport in China, serving the city of Fuyuan and, by extension, the larger regional centre of Jiamusi 200 kilometres to the southwest. Getting There

Fuyuan Dongji Airport is located about 15 kilometres northeast of Fuyuan city centre. The most straightforward way to reach the airport from Fuyuan is by taxi, a trip that takes approximately 20 minutes and costs between 40 and 60 yuan depending on traffic. From Jiamusi, the larger city to the southwest, the journey is more involved: a taxi or private car covers the 200 kilometres in about three hours via the G1011 highway, with a toll of roughly 50 yuan. Alternatively, direct buses from Jiamusi's main long-distance station to Fuyuan depart twice daily (usually at 8:00 and 14:00), take about four hours, and cost around 80 yuan. From Fuyuan bus station, a local taxi can complete the final leg to the airport. There is no direct public transport connecting Jiamusi's airport (Jiamusi Dongjiao Airport) to Fuyuan Dongji Airport, so if you are connecting between flights, plan an overnight stay. For passengers arriving at Fuyuan Dongji, taxis are available outside the terminal, but they are not plentiful — if you have a flight to catch, it is wise to arrange a pick-up with your hotel or a local contact in advance. The airport has a small car park for private vehicles, and parking is free for the first hour, then 5 yuan per hour thereafter.

Inside the Terminal

The terminal at Fuyuan Dongji Airport is a single-storey building with a functional, no-frills layout. Security is efficient but thorough: the queue rarely exceeds ten people, and the screening process takes about five minutes. Travellers flying into Fuyuan Dongji often have Jiamusi as their ultimate destination, either because they have business there or because they plan to visit the Wanda Mountain Forest Park or other attractions in the region. Jiamusi itself is a city with a distinct character shaped by its position on the Songhua River and its history as a centre of grain production and heavy machinery manufacturing. The city's central square, with a statue of Chairman Mao, and the nearby Riverside Park offer a glimpse of everyday life in a medium-sized Chinese industrial city. The Dongji Island on the Russian border, accessible from Fuyuan, draws tourists for its view of the Amur River and the Russian town of Khabarovsk on the opposite bank. Culturally, the area is a blend of Han Chinese, Manchu, and Korean influences, visible in the local cuisine — dishes like pickled vegetables, grilled fish, and steamed buns dominate, with Russian touches such as borscht appearing in some restaurants. The region's history of border disputes and trade agreements gives the landscape a layered quality: watchtowers, customs posts, and commemorative plaques mark the shifting lines of control. The busiest times are Monday at 7:00, Tuesday at 6:00, Wednesday at 12:00, and Thursday at 20:00, so plan to arrive at least an hour early on those days to allow for potential queues.
