Visited on October 11, 2025, at 9:49 AM. Just passing through. Wei Bao and I finished our road trip through Kyushu and stopped here for a layover back to Taiwan. Because the free WiFi didn't work, I'm giving it 3 stars.
Shanghai Pudong International Airport (Pu Dong Ji Chang) is one of China's busiest aviation hubs, serving the Shanghai metropolitan area and the broader Yangtze River Delta region. As a primary gateway for international and domestic flights, it handles millions of passengers each year, connecting Shanghai to major cities across Asia, Europe, North America, and beyond. The airport is a key component of Shanghai's status as a global financial and trade centre, facilitating both business travel and tourism. While the airport's official designation places it in the Baoshan district, it is widely known as Pudong International Airport and is located on the eastern side of Shanghai, near the coast of the East China Sea.
Pudong International Airport is situated approximately 30 kilometres east of central Shanghai, in the Pudong New Area. The airport is well connected to the city centre and surrounding regions via multiple transport modes. The Shanghai Maglev Train, the world's first commercially operated high-speed maglev line, connects the airport to Longyang Road metro station in about 8 minutes, reaching speeds of up to 431 km/h. This is the fastest option for reaching the city. Additionally, the Shanghai Metro Line 2 provides a direct link between the airport and major destinations like People's Square and Hongqiao, though the journey takes over an hour. Airport buses serve various routes across Shanghai, including Jing'an Temple, The Bund, and Shanghai Railway Station. Taxis and ride-sharing services are widely available at designated ranks outside each terminal. For those driving, the airport is accessible via the S1 Yingbin Expressway and other major roads, with long-term and short-term parking options available. The airport also serves as a connecting point for regional travel, with frequent bus and train services to nearby cities such as Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Nanjing.
Pudong International Airport provides a range of facilities to ensure a comfortable experience for all passengers, including those with mobility challenges. Confirmed amenities include a wheelchair-accessible car park with designated spaces close to the terminal entrances, wheelchair-accessible entrances with automatic doors and ramps, and wheelchair-accessible toilets throughout the terminals. Family-friendly amenities include baby changing tables in both male and female restrooms. While the airport's extensive commercial offerings are not detailed here, passengers can expect duty-free shops, restaurants, lounges, and other services common to major international hubs. For assistance, travellers can contact the airport information desks or request wheelchair service when booking flights. The airport's website (listed below) provides further details on accessibility services and terminal maps.
Shanghai, at the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, is China's most populous city and a global centre for finance, culture, and innovation. The region is known for its iconic skyline along the Bund, historic gardens like Yuyuan, and modern attractions such as Shanghai Disneyland. The nearby Zhujiajiao water town offers a glimpse of traditional canals and architecture. As a major hub, the airport also serves travellers exploring the broader region: the ancient water towns of Suzhou and Hangzhou's West Lake are within a few hours' reach by high-speed rail. The Yangtze River Delta is a manufacturing and economic powerhouse, making the airport a vital link for business travellers. The area experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters, so travellers should prepare accordingly.
