Busiest on Mondays around 1 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
It is a very small airport, but it has what you need. If you want to eat, please think twice, there is only a store, no restaurant.
Perfectly decent little airport, about the size of a school gym! There's s little coffee shop and a couple of rental car stalls. Unfortunately there is no bus service from/to Castro, but the Uber app works.
A nice little airport. Not sure why we need to show up that early, as Latam say as the airport was not open when we came. Only one small shop and nothing else. The shop is before security.
Make sure to go to the toilet and buy drinks and food before going through security as there is only 1 universal toilet and no shops
Aeropuerto Mocopulli Chiloe (also known as Mocopulli Airport) is a regional airport located near Dalcahue on the eastern coast of Chiloe Island, Chile. It serves as a key transport hub for the Chiloe Archipelago, a region known for its distinctive wooden churches, picturesque fishing villages, and unique cuisine. The airport primarily handles domestic flights from mainland Chile, with regular services to Santiago and Puerto Montt, making it a convenient alternative to the longer bus and ferry journey. Opened to address the growing demand for air travel to the island, it is a modern facility designed to accommodate small to medium-sized aircraft.
Despite its relatively small size, Mocopulli Chiloe Airport offers a range of basic amenities for passengers:
The airport does not have extensive retail or dining outlets, so passengers are advised to bring their own snacks or refreshments if needed.
Mocopulli Chiloe Airport operates on a schedule that may not be open every day. Based on typical operations, the airport is busiest during the morning hours, with peak activity around 8 am and 9 am. It is advisable to confirm flight schedules with your airline, as the airport may close or have limited services during off-peak times or on certain days.
The airport is not a 24-hour facility, and departures and arrivals are concentrated during daytime hours. Plan your arrival accordingly, typically arriving at least one hour before a domestic flight.
The airport is located approximately 5 km south of Dalcahue and about 15 km north of Castro, the island's main city. Access is via Route 5 (Pan-American Highway) and local roads. Parking is available on-site, with designated spaces for wheelchair users. Taxis and private transfers are the primary ground transport options; public bus services are limited. If driving, note that the airport's car park is small but adequate for the volume of traffic.
Chiloe Island is a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists, drawing visitors to its UNESCO-listed churches, the bustling market of Castro, and the scenic coastline. Mocopulli Airport plays a vital role in making the island more accessible year-round, especially during the rainy winter months when ferry crossings can be disrupted. The airport opened in 2012 (or thereabouts) to replace the smaller landing strip on the island, significantly reducing travel time from the mainland. Airlines such as LATAM and Sky Airline operate flights, with journey times of roughly 1.5 hours from Santiago.
Mocopulli Chiloe Airport is a functional, accessible regional airport offering essential services for travellers to Chiloe. While modest in scale, it provides the basics: Wi-Fi, accessible facilities, and a clean terminal. Check your flight schedule and confirm hours of operation, as the airport does not run continuously every day. For a smooth journey, arrive early, come prepared, and enjoy the gateway to one of Chile's most distinctive regions.
