Busiest on Mondays around 12 pm — usually busy.
Great little airport with a car rental on site and very friendly staff. Such a remarkable drop into an amazing, glacier carved valley over the bonkers British Columbia coast ranges.
Small cute airport, I wish it could have some small vending machines or cafe/coffee stand.
Was over 60 mins early for flight. I needed to send a package off... man behind counter was visibly upset I wasn't earlier to hand in my package for the flight. Continued to be rude and aggressive towards me asking what time I needed to be here to have my package accepted. He told me he had to check in passengers in a few minutes and didn't have time to take my package. Didn't realize bella coolas airport was so busy (sarcasm)

Bella Coola Airport (QBC) serves as the primary air gateway to the remote Bella Coola Valley on British Columbia's central coast. It is a small, single-runway facility connecting this stunning region to Vancouver and other points via scheduled flights. The airport is widely appreciated for its efficiency, friendly staff, and breathtaking mountain views that make the arrival itself an experience worth savoring. Travelers passing through Bella Coola can expect a straightforward, no-fuss terminal that prioritizes function over frills.
Located in Hagensborg, roughly 5 kilometres south of the town of Bella Coola, the airport sits in a dramatic setting along the Bella Coola River, surrounded by the Coast Mountains. The area is part of the Central Coast Regional District, a region known for its rugged wilderness and the Great Bear Rainforest—a vast temperate rainforest that draws hikers, kayakers, and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. Bella Coola Airport is a lifeline for both local residents and tourists; it handles scheduled flights operated by Pacific Coastal Airlines, as well as charters and medevac traffic. The terminal building is small, with a single waiting area and ticket counter, reflecting the airport's role as a modest but essential transportation hub. The approach is particularly scenic: as the aircraft descends through mountain valleys, passengers are treated to views of deep green forests, winding rivers, and sometimes even bears or eagles below. Weather can be a factor in this mountainous region, so flights are occasionally delayed or cancelled, but the airline works hard to keep connections reliable. The airport is not open around the clock; the terminal opens only for scheduled flight periods, typically around 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., aligning with peak travel times. This limited schedule means it is wise to coordinate arrival and departure times carefully, especially if connecting from other modes of transport.
The airport's history is tied to the development of the Bella Coola Valley, which relied on air service before road access improved. Today, it remains a vital link for mail, medical evacuations, and the tourism industry that fuels the local economy. Its compact size and single-runway design mean that operations are simple and efficient, but also that amenities are sparse. For many passengers, the airport's small scale is a welcome change from busy urban hubs, offering a relaxed atmosphere and personalized service.
Bella Coola Airport has no permanent restaurant, café, or vending machines. There are no food or beverage options available inside the terminal once you pass through the minimal security screening. This is one of the airport's notable limitations, so travelers should plan accordingly. Pack a small meal, bring snacks, and carry a refillable water bottle (though water fountains may be available in the terminal—be sure to fill up before departure). Alternatively, stop in the town of Bella Coola before heading to the airport; the Bella Coola Bakery and a few local eateries offer sandwiches, pastries, and coffee. If you are arriving on a late flight, note that the airport itself will not provide any dining options, so have dinner plans arranged elsewhere. Given the remote location and the sparse facilities, it is best to come prepared and not rely on the airport for sustenance.
Highway 20 is the main road connecting Bella Coola to the airport. The drive from the town centre takes about 5 minutes, and the airport has a small parking lot available for short-term and long-term use. Parking is free or low-cost, and the lot is a short walk from the terminal entrance. Road conditions can vary, especially in winter when snow and ice are possible, so check forecasts and carry tire chains if needed.
A car rental desk is located on site at the airport. This is the most convenient way to explore the Bella Coola Valley and the surrounding region, as public transit is extremely limited. It is advisable to book a car in advance, especially during peak summer months when demand is high. The rental provider typically offers a range of vehicles suitable for the area's gravel roads and mountain terrain. Confirm the rental hours with the company, as they may align with flight arrivals only.
There is no dedicated airport shuttle service. A few local taxi operators serve the airport, but they are not always readily available and may require advance booking. It is best to arrange transportation before you arrive. Some lodges and hotels in the area offer airport pickup for their guests—inquire when making your reservation.
Walking from the airport to Bella Coola town is not recommended, as the road is narrow and has no sidewalk. Cycling is possible for adventurous travelers, but be prepared for traffic and weather conditions.
One of the standout features of Bella Coola Airport is the quality of its staff. Check-in agents, gate attendants, and ground personnel are consistently described as friendly, helpful, and efficient. The small size of the airport fosters a personal touch; you will likely be greeted by name and your luggage handled with care. Security screening is minimal, reflecting the airport's low-risk profile, and the entire process from drop-off to boarding is usually smooth and quick.
However, there is a particular note about package acceptance. The airport may refuse to accept packages or special deliveries at certain times, possibly due to space constraints or operational policies. If you plan to drop off packages before a flight, arriving early is essential. Some passengers have reported encountering a lack of flexibility regarding package handling, so it is best to confirm with the airline or airport staff beforehand if you need to send cargo.
The terminal itself is clean and well maintained. The wheelchair-accessible parking, entrance, and toilet are properly designed and easy to navigate, making the airport accessible for travelers with mobility needs. The toilets are basic but kept clean.
Bella Coola Airport may be small, but it is an efficient and friendly gateway to one of Canada's most spectacular natural regions. With proper preparation, your experience here will be smooth and enjoyable, leaving you free to focus on the beauty of the Great Bear Rainforest.
