It's a very small airport but it has everything, a place to get some food, guide offices, toilets.
My hot sauce was confiscated from my carry-on luggage, with the explanation that it wasn't allowed. Upon arriving at Salvador airport, the same hot sauce was being sold in the shops.
Passing through the famous city of Lencois... Very interesting. As it is a historical city, it has maaaany old houses there, I think to really like it, you have to go to the tourist spots amidst the beautiful nature that God placed in Bahia... It is an old diamond mining city in eastern Brazil. It borders the vast Chapada Diamantina National Park, a mountainous area with forests, waterfalls and caves. The city's cobblestone streets are full of 19th-century buildings. The Afranio Peixoto Cultural Center displays works and personal items of Peixoto, a writer born in Lencois. On the other side of the Lencois River is the whitewashed church of Senhor dos Passos. Worth a trip of at least a week ;)
Cel Horacio de Matos Airport is well located for tourist routes in the Chapada Diamantina National Park in Bahia. The airport has car rental services. There are two weekly flights (Thursday and Sunday) always in the afternoon from the capital Salvador by the airline Azul. It is worth checking the Azul website a month in advance and getting much cheaper promotional prices, or even better if you have Tudo Azul miles. Come and discover the beauties of Chapada Diamantina-BA. Tourist cities such as: Lencois, Palmeiras, Andarai, Mucuge and Iraquara.
Lençóis Airport, officially known as Aeroporto Coronel Horácio de Matos (IATA: LEC, ICAO: SBLE), is the main air gateway to the Chapada Diamantina region in Bahia, Brazil. This small regional airport primarily serves domestic flights, connecting the historic town of Lençóis with Salvador and other Brazilian cities. It handles a modest volume of passengers, mainly tourists and locals traveling for business or medical reasons. The airport is named after a local political figure and operates under the administration of the state government.
Located approximately 2 kilometres from Lençóis town centre, the airport sits at an elevation of about 500 metres on the edge of the Chapada Diamantina highlands. It plays a vital role in providing air access to one of Brazil’s most popular ecotourism destinations, which is known for its dramatic landscapes, waterfalls, and hiking trails. The airport’s single runway and compact terminal reflect its regional character, focusing on efficiency and essential services rather than large-scale retail. Most flights are operated by smaller aircraft, typically regional turboprops, with a handful of daily arrivals and departures. The busiest times at the terminal are mid-afternoon (around 3 pm to 4 pm), when connecting flights tend to cluster.
Lençóis Airport offers a limited but practical set of amenities for passengers. The terminal building includes a small waiting area, restrooms, and basic seating.
The airport provides clean, wheelchair-accessible toilets for both men and women. There is also a dedicated changing table in the restroom area, making it convenient for passengers travelling with infants or young children.
The terminal is designed with accessibility in mind. The car park features designated wheelchair-accessible spaces, and the entrance to the building is fully accessible for wheelchairs and mobility aids. The interior layout is flat and barrier-free, ensuring comfortable movement for all passengers.
Beyond restrooms and accessibility features, the airport does not have extensive commercial facilities. There is no restaurant, café, or duty-free shop inside the terminal. Passengers are advised to bring their own snacks or water, especially for longer waits. The airport does have a small information desk that can assist with flight queries and local transport. Free Wi-Fi is not confirmed, so it is best to plan accordingly.
Lençóis Airport does not operate 24/7. Its hours align with flight schedules, typically opening a few hours before the first departure and closing after the last arrival. Peak activity occurs between 3 pm and 4 pm, when multiple flights may be scheduled. The airport is not open every day; it may close on certain days of the week or during off-peak seasons. Travellers should confirm flight schedules and airport opening hours with their airline or check online shortly before their trip, as timetables can vary.
The airport is about a 5-minute drive from central Lençóis. Taxis and ride-hailing services are generally available during flight times, but off-peak arrivals may require pre-arranged transport. The town itself is walkable, but the airport is outside the historic centre, so a vehicle is recommended for luggage or groups.
The airport does not have a published email address or social media page. The phone number listed is the primary contact for general inquiries, though it may be staffed only during operational hours.
Lençóis Airport serves as a small but essential hub for travellers heading into the Chapada Diamantina region. While its amenities are basic, the facility prioritises accessibility and cleanliness. The airport’s compact size means passenger flows are manageable, and its peak hours are brief. For a smooth journey, plan transport in advance and arrive with essentials. Whether you are arriving for ecotourism adventures or departing after exploring the stunning landscapes, Lençóis Airport offers a straightforward gateway to one of Brazil’s most beautiful natural regions.
