Aircon is on today. Bar/Cafe closed. Plenty of passengers waiting to have a drink or snack. Oh! The vending machine is there??? It has three cans of soft drink and a packet of nuts. Do better Learmonth Airport- Do better!
Easily the worst airport in Australia.... Cafe to be open is hit and miss....coffee machine doesn't work.... Vending machine has nothing in it and you can't use card because the wifi is non existent... the water dispenser doesn't have cups.... Gave it 1 star to review. For an Australian tourist town.... A Joke!
Basic regional airport. No cafe just a vending machine but that's expected . Airport staff shut door to tarmac before half the passengers left the terminal for out charter flight, had to call someone over to unlock so we wouldn't miss our flight. Perhaps a headcount of passengers would be a good idea in the future
This would have to be one of the very worst airports I've been to. A cafe that doesn't open, a self-service coffee machine that's out of order, and a snack vending machine that has hardly any stock - and you guessed it, is also out of order. The only reason I'm giving this place even one star is because the staff are friendly, and it at least does have aeroplanes!
Learmonth Airport (LEA) is a regional airport serving the Exmouth area in Western Australia. It is the primary air access point for travellers heading to the Ningaloo Reef and the broader Coral Coast region. The airport handles regular domestic flights, mostly from Perth, operated by airlines such as Qantas and Virgin Australia. It caters to a mix of tourists, business travellers, and local residents, with a significant seasonal influx during the winter months when whale shark sightings peak. While modest in size, Learmonth Airport plays a vital role in connecting this remote part of Australia to the rest of the country.
Learmonth Airport is situated approximately 36 kilometres south of Exmouth town centre, near the small settlement of Learmonth. It lies on the western side of the Exmouth Gulf, within the Shire of Exmouth. The airport is accessed via Airport Road, which branches off the Minilya-Exmouth Road. Driving from Exmouth takes about 30 minutes. Car rental companies including Budget and Hertz have desks at the terminal, and several local shuttle services offer transfers between the airport and Exmouth accommodation. Taxis are also available but should be pre-booked. For those driving themselves, the airport provides a car park, including a wheelchair-accessible area. The nearest major city is Perth, about 1,200 kilometres south by road; most visitors fly directly to Learmonth.
Learmonth Airport is a compact terminal, but it includes essential amenities to ensure a comfortable travel experience. The airport is wheelchair-accessible, with a designated wheelchair-accessible car park and a level entrance. Inside, there are wheelchair-accessible toilets and a standard toilet, as well as a baby changing table for families. While dining options are limited – there is no full-service restaurant – vending machines and a small café or kiosk may be available during peak flight times. The terminal has seating areas and flight information displays. Note that there are no ATM or currency exchange facilities on site, so travellers should prepare cash before arrival. Free Wi-Fi is not guaranteed; check with your airline or the airport office.
Learmonth Airport serves as the gateway to the Ningaloo Region, one of Australia’s most spectacular natural areas. The Ningaloo Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stretches over 260 kilometres along the coast and is famous for its fringing reef, which is accessible directly from the shore. From March to August, the reef is a hotspot for swimming with whale sharks, the world’s largest fish. Other marine life includes manta rays, humpback whales (June to November), and abundant sea turtles. Cape Range National Park, adjacent to the reef, offers rugged canyons, gorges, and hiking trails, with iconic spots like Yardie Creek and Turquoise Bay. The town of Exmouth provides accommodation, dining, and charter services. The region also has a military history: the Harold E. Holt Naval Communication Station, a Very Low Frequency facility, is located near Learmonth. The climate is arid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters, making it a year-round destination.
Learmonth Airport is not open every day; its hours correspond to flight schedules. Peak traffic typically occurs around 1–2 p.m., when flights from Perth arrive and depart. Travelers should confirm flight times with their airline and arrive at least one hour before domestic departures. The airport contact number is +61 8 9949 1326. The official website is maintained by the Shire of Exmouth at http://www.exmouth.wa.gov.au/about-the-airport.aspx. It provides flight information, car rental details, and contact numbers. For parking, there is a short-term and long-term car park. Since the airport is small, services are limited, so it is advisable to plan ahead for food and transport.
